  • Buy strong colonies that show steady flight activity in the morning and marked nest construction inside an observation box when possible.
  • Introduce colonies gently—place the new hive where the original colony was for a day if relocating, then move gradually to the final site to reduce disorientation.

Colony establishment and routine management

  • Initial period: Give new colonies 2–6 weeks to settle. Minimize inspections and disturbances during this time.
  • Inspections: Check every 4–6 weeks for signs of growth, brood presence and storage pots. Stingless bees are sensitive to heavy handling—inspect quickly and calmly.
  • Feeding: Feed sugar solution (1:1 water:sugar) during dearth periods or when colonies are small. Offer pollen substitute if natural pollen is scarce, but do so sparingly to avoid robbing behaviour from other insects.
  • Colony division: When colonies are vigorous, you can split them to raise new colonies. Move a portion of brood and food stores into a prepared hive and allow workers to reorient. Timing during a nectar flow improves success.

Pest and disease management

Stingless bees have different pest profiles than Apis bees. Common issues include:

  • Pests: Ants, spiders and hive beetles can invade hives. Use ant‑guards, keep hive stands clean and avoid placing hives on the ground.
  • Wax moths and beetles: Maintain strong colonies—weak, poorly ventilated hives are more susceptible.
  • Pathogens: There is limited data on stingless bee diseases in India. Practice good hygiene: disinfect tools, avoid mixing combs between colonies, and isolate suspicious colonies.

Biological and cultural controls (cleaning, colony strength) are the best first steps. Consult local extension if you suspect unusual mortality.

Seasonal care in Telangana

  • Pre‑monsoon (Feb–May): Strengthen colonies, provide shade, ensure water. Split strong colonies ahead of peak flows if you intend to scale up.

  • Build links with organic farmers, herbal product makers and local stores. Participation in farmers’ markets can help establish a brand.
  • Record costs and yields per hive to understand labour and material economics. Start small and scale after you have stable colony management.

Regulation and community engagement

There are usually fewer regulatory hurdles for stingless beekeeping than for commercial honey imports/exports, but check with Telangana’s horticulture or animal husbandry departments for any local rules on moving colonies. Engage with local beekeeping groups—knowledge exchange reduces losses and helps with sourcing queens or starter nests.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Over‑harvesting: removing too much honey causes colony weakness and winter losses.
