Plan your selling strategy before harvest to avoid distress sales:

  • Local primary agricultural markets (mandis): Common option; check daily rates and arrival patterns. Deliver clean, well-dried grain to get better prices.
  • Private buyers/processors: Small feed mills and flour processors buy directly—negotiate after comparing sample quality with mandi rates.
  • Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) or cooperatives: Aggregation improves bargaining power and reduces transport costs.
  • Forward contracts and buyer agreements: If available locally, locking price and quantity in advance reduces market risk but read contract terms carefully.

  • Use local extension services and seeds from trusted dealers. Local SAU/ICAR recommendations are the best source for variety choices and sprays.
  • Record yields, inputs and pest events—simple records help refine decisions for the next season and make you more attractive to buyers and FPO partners.

Sorghum remains a dependable crop for Saurashtra if you match variety choice, sowing time and moisture conservation practices to local conditions and manage post-harvest quality. Practical, low-cost improvements—timely weed control, balanced fertilization, proper drying and smart marketing—deliver the largest gains for smallholders.
