  • Processors and soap factories: seek direct contracts by demonstrating consistent quality and supply.
  • Value addition: small-scale drying, packaging or making simple liquid/solid cleaners can increase margins but requires compliance with labelling and local regulations.
  • Cooperatives and farmer groups: pooling harvests helps meet processor scale requirements and improves bargaining power.
  • Online and niche buyers: organic and natural-product markets value traceability; invest in clean packing and certification if targeting these buyers.

Document quality, maintain records of production and establish relationships with several buyers to reduce market risk.

Economics and risk management

Start with a small block or pilot plot to learn local varieties, pest issues, and market preferences. Costs are front-loaded for establishment and can be lowered by using farm labour and on-farm compost. Risks include drought, poor drying conditions (leading to mould) and price fluctuation. Mitigate risks with staggered plantings, proper post-harvest handling and market linkages.
