Why grow shikakai in Arunachal Pradesh?

Shikakai (commonly Acacia concinna) is a hardy, multipurpose shrub/tree used for natural haircare, traditional medicines and soil conservation. Its adaptability to the humid, sub-tropical to temperate pockets of Arunachal Pradesh, coupled with low input needs, makes it a good option for smallholders, boundary planting and agroforestry systems.

Site and soil requirements

Choose well-drained slopes or flat areas with good sun exposure. Shikakai tolerates a wide range of soils but performs best on light to medium-textured soils with good drainage. Avoid waterlogged lowlands. The species prefers a soil pH from slightly acidic to neutral; if the site is very acidic, liming can help establishment.

  • Sooty mould/scale: control sap-sucking insects early; neem-based sprays can help.
  • Root rot: avoid waterlogged soils and keep good drainage.

Harvesting pods and timing
