Site and soil requirements

Rooibos prefers:

  • Well-drained, sandy to sandy-loam soils. Heavy clay or waterlogged soils cause root rot.
  • Slightly acidic to neutral pH (around 5.5–7). Avoid strongly alkaline sites.
  • Light to moderate fertility—overly fertile sites encourage vegetative growth and reduce tea quality.
  • Full sun; plants dislike deep shade.

On undulating Kongu Nadu terrain select ridges and slopes with good drainage. If you have heavier soils, consider raised beds or mixing in sand and coarse grit to improve porosity before planting.

Climate and water

On-farm processing: fermentation and drying

Processing transforms green cut material into the characteristic red rooibos tea. Basic steps you can do on-farm:

  • Cut and sort: remove coarse stems and foreign material. Process cut material the same day to avoid spoilage.
  • Chopping/Crushing (optional): many systems macerate or chop shoots to speed oxidation; a small hammer mill or mechanical shredder works for batches.
  • Fermentation/oxidation: spread chopped material in a thin layer and keep it moist and warm to encourage enzymatic oxidation. Turn the material periodically. Fermentation time varies—monitor colour and aroma rather than fixed hours.
  • Drying: once the desired oxidation is reached, dry thoroughly to safe moisture for storage. Use a solar dryer, tunnel dryer or low-temp mechanical dryer. Aim for even, low-heat drying to preserve aroma and avoid scorching.
  • Cooling and conditioning: cool dried tea on a clean surface and condition in a dry room before packing to stabilize moisture.

Sort the dried rooibos to remove dust, sticks and coarse stems. Grade leaf size if possible—finer particles brew faster and are often preferred for tea bags; larger leafy grades suit loose-leaf markets.

  • Don’t over-fertilise—rooibos prefers modest fertility.
