Site selection and pond types

Choose sites with reliable freshwater supply during the dry season. In Konkan, natural ponds, dugout ponds and earthen farms are common. Avoid low-lying brackish areas near tidal creeks unless you can control salinity.

  • Prefer ponds that hold water year-round or can be recharged from a freshwater source.
  • Soil: lateritic soils are common—ensure pond bottom compaction to reduce seepage.
