  • Feed smaller amounts several times a day (2–4 times) rather than one big feed. Use demand-feeding or feed trays to avoid wastage.
  • Complement formulated feed with green forage (duckweed), oilcakes or rice bran to reduce cost; ensure balanced protein and avoid overfeeding.

Water quality and aeration

Maintain water quality for steady growth. Rohu tolerates a range of conditions but performs best with dissolved oxygen (DO) above 4 mg/L and pH 6.5–8.5.

  • Monitor DO early morning and late afternoon—supplemental aeration is essential in intensive systems and during hot months or algal blooms.
  • Control excessive plankton blooms by reducing feed, partial water exchange or providing shade to lower surface temperatures.
  • If possible, use simple aerators (paddlewheel or diffused air) during summer and night-time low-DO periods.

Health management

Prevention is more practical than treatment. Maintain hygiene, good nutrition and avoid overcrowding.

  • Quarantine new stock for at least a week; avoid mixing unknown sources.
  • Inspect fish regularly for lethargy, skin lesions, gill problems or abnormal swimming.
  • Common problems in Bihar include parasitic infections, bacterial gill/skin issues and fungal growth following stress. Treat based on local extension recommendations—often improving water quality and removing affected fish is first step.
