Tripura’s humid tropical climate, red lateritic and alluvial soils, and ready local markets make it suitable for raw (cooking) banana production. Raw bananas are used in local cuisine, roadside markets, and by small processors, offering steady demand throughout the year when timed right.

Choose the right variety

For raw/cooking use select varieties known for firm texture and transportability. In the northeast, farmers commonly grow stout-stemmed, hardy types that tolerate humidity and pests. When choosing planting material, prioritize disease-free, vigorous suckers or tissue-cultured plantlets from reputable sources.

Site selection and soil preparation

Key considerations:

  • Elevation and exposure: flat to gently sloping land with good drainage. Bananas do not tolerate waterlogging.
  • Soil: deep, loamy to sandy loam with good organic matter. Avoid heavy clay that retains water.
