Why grow pearl millet in the Indus Valley?

Pearl millet (bajra) fits the hot, semi-arid zones of the Indus Valley because it tolerates high temperatures, low rainfall and poor soils better than many other cereals. It is a short-duration crop that can be grown in both the kharif season and as an opportunistic crop on residual moisture. For farmers, the crop offers quick turnover, fodder value, and reliable grain for markets and household use.

Site and soil

Pearl millet does best on well-drained soils: sandy loam to light clay loam. Avoid waterlogged fields. In the Indus Valley, many fields are alkaline or have salinity issues; millet tolerates moderate salinity but yields drop on highly saline soils.
