Murrah is a hardy dairy buffalo breed well-suited to the humid, straw-abundant landscapes of India’s rice-growing regions. The combination of abundant paddy straw, wet-season water availability and local milk markets makes Murrah an efficient animal to integrate with rice-based cropping systems.

Choosing animals: what to look for

  • Source trusted stock: Buy from government farms, cooperative societies or reputed private breeders. Inspect health and records where available.
  • Age and reproductive status: For replacements, prefer heifers that have had a health check and vaccination history. For milk animals, check parity history and signs of chronic mastitis or lameness.
  • Conformation: Look for a broad barrel, strong legs, well-placed udder with moderate attachments, alertness and good body condition. Murrah animals are usually jet black with tightly curled horns; these traits correlate with breed purity but performance matters more than color alone.
