Manuka (Leptospermum spp.) is best known for producing dense, aromatic flowering that supports honey production and essential oils. While it’s native to cooler, wetter regions, certain genotypes and careful management can make commercial plantings possible in arid areas like the Thar. This guide focuses on practical steps growers can take to improve establishment, reduce risk and capture value from honey and secondary products.

Choose the right plant material

Genetics matters more than paperwork. In hot, dry sites select plant material that is demonstrably heat- and drought-tolerant rather than default nursery stock from temperate regions.

  • Propagate by cuttings or tissue-culture clones to keep uniform flowering and reduce the variability of seed-grown plants.

  • Poor attention to drainage: waterlogged roots kill manuka quickly; raised planting or improved drainage pays off.

  • Over-fertilizing for vegetative growth: the best returns often come from flowers and oils, not big woody shrubs.
