  • Fertilizer: light application of balanced NPK (low nitrogen) during the growing season—follow local soil test recommendations. Excess nitrogen increases susceptibility to fungal disease.
  • Micronutrients: monitor iron and manganese in alkaline soils; correct deficiencies based on leaf symptoms and tests.

Pruning, training and crop life

Regular pruning keeps plants compact and productive:

  • First-year: allow plants to establish; remove flower stems to focus energy on root and vegetative growth if flowers appear early.

  • Documenting quality (variety, harvest time, distillation method) helps access niche buyers who will pay premium prices.
