Is Indore suitable for kola nut?

Kola trees favour humid, warm, frost-free conditions and deep, well-drained soils. Indore and the surrounding Malwa region have a tropical wet-and-dry climate with a pronounced dry season. That means:

  • Advantages: warm temperatures most of the year and long growing season.
  • Challenges: a dry winter and hot, dry pre-monsoon months; lower humidity than the kola tree’s native range; occasional cold snaps are possible.

Recommendation: treat kola as a trial or shade-tree crop and plan irrigation and wind protection. Planting in protected micro-sites (near water sources, on north-facing slopes or in homesteads with shelter) will improve establishment.

Leaf tissue testing after year 3 helps fine-tune nutrient needs. Avoid over-fertilizing nitrogen as that can promote excessive vegetative growth at the expense of reproductive development.

Prune to develop a strong, well-spaced scaffold and to keep the lower trunk clear. Remove dead, crossing, or diseased branches. Kola benefits from some shade in hot, dry climates—interplanting with taller shade trees or using agroforestry systems can help.

  • Export: exporting requires compliance with phytosanitary rules and consistent quality. This is complex for small growers—partnering with exporters or cooperatives can reduce risk.
