Why grow kiwano in Madurai?

Kiwano (Cucumis metuliferus), also called horned melon or African horned cucumber, is a novelty crop with a niche market value. In Madurai’s hot, dry tropical climate it can perform well when irrigated and grown on a simple trellis. The crop fits well into mixed vegetable farms and high-value small-holder systems aiming at urban markets, farm-gate sales or niche exporters.

Site selection and climate considerations

Madurai is hot for much of the year with distinct dry periods. Kiwano tolerates heat but needs consistent moisture during vine growth and fruit filling. Kiwano is harvested when the rind turns bright orange (or orange-yellow depending on variety) and horns are firm. Fruit should detach easily with a short stem segment. Handle gently—the rind is thick but spines can bruise.
