Site selection and soil

Choose a site with:

  • Full sun to light shade — best dye quality is from plants grown with good sunlight.

  • Value addition (ready-to-use paste, blended herbal products) raises margins but adds labor and regulatory considerations for cosmetics.

  • Use raised beds or mounded rows in low-lying, monsoon-prone fields to prevent waterlogging.
  • Plant windbreaks or locate plots away from salt spray to protect leaves and reduce stress.
  • Keep small trials before planting large areas—observe local cultivar performance and dye quality under your microclimate.
  • Network with local artisans and beauty businesses to understand quality parameters they require (leaf freshness, powder fineness, color yield).
