Choose the right time and micro-site

Best planting window for Malwa: sow in October–November to mature through the cool season. Beetroot prefers cool, not frosty, conditions during root bulking. Avoid very shallow or waterlogged low spots; choose well-drained fields with some organic matter. On irrigated plots you can also plant in late summer for a winter harvest if you can protect seedlings from extreme heat.

Aspect and shelter

Choose fields that get full sun in winter. If your farm is exposed to strong winds, a windbreak will reduce leaf damage and drying, particularly early in crop growth.

  • Surface irrigation works but avoid waterlogging; beds or slight ridge planting helps drainage.
  • Reduce irrigation in the last week or two before harvest to improve flavour and shelf life.

Weed, thinning and intercultural operations

Weeds compete heavily with small beet seedlings. Keep the field weed-free in the first 4–6 weeks. Mechanical shallow hoeing is effective; avoid deep cultivation that disturbs roots.

Thin plants at the 3–4 leaf stage to final spacing. Thinned seedlings make a ready leafy vegetable if sold quickly.

For local market: keep roots cool and shaded, packed in clean crates with air circulation. Remove soil and avoid washing if you will store; washing promotes decay.

  • Short-term storage: cool, shaded, ventilated place for several weeks.
  • Longer storage: roots store better in moist sand or sawdust in a cool cellar. Maintain ventilation and moderate humidity to prevent shrivelling and rots.

Crop rotations and soil health

Rotate beetroot with cereals or legumes to reduce pest and disease build-up. Avoid repeated beetroot or other brassica/leafy vegetable crops on the same land. Incorporate legumes into rotations to build soil nitrogen and improve structure.
