Why grow apricot (khubani) in the Cauvery Basin?

Apricot is traditionally a temperate tree crop, but with careful site selection and choice of low‑chill varieties, it can be a viable niche crop in the cooler, higher elevations and protected pockets of the Cauvery Basin (parts of Kodagu, Nilgiris fringe, and higher blocks of Mysore plateau). Apricot offers quick returns compared with many fruit trees, early fruiting, and good market prices for fresh and dried fruit if quality is managed.

Site and climate requirements

  • Elevation and temperature: Choose sites at higher elevation or with cold nights — areas above 700–1000 m are preferred. Apricot needs some winter chill; low‑chill selections reduce but do not eliminate this need.
  • Frost risk: Avoid frost pockets where cold air accumulates. Late spring frosts during bloom cause heavy crop loss.
  • Soil: Well‑drained soils are essential. Apricot roots suffer in waterlogged clay. Sandy‑loam or loam with good structure is best; pH 6.0–7.5 preferred.

  • First years: Train to an open‑center or modified central leader. Aim for 3–4 scaffold branches well spaced around the trunk.
  • Annual pruning: Remove crossing and dead wood in late winter before bud swell. Thin inward‑growing shoots and open the canopy.
  • Summer pruning: Light summer pruning after harvest can control excessive vegetative growth and improve fruiting wood balance.

Flowering, pollination and fruit set

Apricot blossoms appear early and are susceptible to frost. Many apricot varieties are partially self‑fertile but yield improves with cross‑pollination.   • Brown rot and fruit rots: Affects blossoms and fruit near harvest. Reduce humidity in canopy by pruning, remove mummified fruit, apply preventive fungicide sprays at bloom and pre‑harvest as per extension advice.

  • Fruit fly: Major pest for ripening fruit. Use bait traps, protein baits, ring‑barking and timely harvest. Bagging fruit is effective for small growers.

  • Harvest when fruit shows full colour and slight give — mature fruit continues ripening off tree. Avoid harvesting fully soft fruit for transport.
  • Handle carefully to avoid bruises. Use shallow picking trays and avoid overstacking boxes.
  • Sort and grade by size and quality immediately. Cool fruit quickly to 0–2°C if cold chain available; otherwise store in shaded, ventilated areas to slow overripening.
  • For local markets, offer tree‑ripe fruit for higher price. For distant markets, harvest slightly firmer, less ripe fruit and store under cool conditions.
  • Consider value addition: sundried apricots or solar tunnel drying can give good returns if fruit sugar and quality are suitable.

Record keeping and economics

Keep records of variety performance, bloom and harvest dates, yields, inputs, pest issues and prices. Apricot blocks can bear commercially by year 3–4 depending on variety and care; thinning and good management improve size and marketability.

  • Do a small demonstration block before scaling up — see how your microclimate performs for bloom and frost risk.
  • Don’t overwater or allow waterlogging; root problems are common in heavy soils.
  • Match variety to market: some buyers want sweet, soft tree‑ripe fruit; others want firm fruit for transport.
  • Sanitation is critical: remove mummified fruit and pruned wood to reduce disease and pest carryover.
  • Work with local extension services and nurseries to identify varieties proven in nearby hills and to time sprays responsibly.
