Varieties and plant material

There are no widely standardized commercial cultivars everywhere; farmers select populations that give darker dye and better leaf yield. When choosing planting material, prioritize:

  • Local proven lines known to produce strong dye (ask neighbouring growers or extension services).
  • Healthy, disease-free mother plants for stem cuttings.

  • Micronutrients: apply zinc and iron if deficiency symptoms appear (chlorosis, poor growth).

Pruning, training and intercrops

Regular pruning improves leaf quality and makes harvesting easier. Prune to:

Start with a small block, track costs for land preparation, planting, labour for pruning/harvest, drying and grinding, and get local market price information before scaling up.

Common mistakes and practical tips

  • Avoid waterlogging: henna roots are sensitive to standing water. Improve drainage or plant on raised beds if needed.
  • Don’t over-fertilise with nitrogen alone — excessive vegetative growth can lower leaf dye concentration.
  • Monitor leaf colour regularly; poor dye usually indicates a combination of soil, watering, and plant health issues, not just variety.
  • Build links with local mehendi artisans and buyers early to understand quality preferences (leaf age, powder fineness, packaging).
  • Keep records of pruning, harvest dates and yields to refine timing for best dye concentration.
