Choose the right site and microclimate

  • Altitude and chill: Apricots require winter chill hours; look for sites with at least moderate winter cold. Higher, sheltered slopes of 900–1,800 m often give better chill and lower summer humidity than the lowlands.
  • Drainage: Apricot roots are sensitive to waterlogging. Choose well-drained soils or make raised beds/terraces. Avoid valley bottoms and spots that stay wet after rain.
  • Sun and wind: Full sun exposure is essential for flowering and fruit colour. Windbreaks can protect blossoms and fruit from storm damage but maintain air movement to reduce humidity around the canopy.

  • Nitrogen: 200–400 g N split through the season depending on vigour.
