Why figs in the Brahmaputra Valley?

The Brahmaputra Valley has a subtropical to humid climate with warm summers, mild winters and high humidity—conditions where common fig (Ficus carica) and some adapted cultivars can perform well. Figs suit smallholder and mixed orchards, need relatively low inputs once established, and offer fast returns if free from major pests and waterlogging.

Site and soil selection

Pick a site with full sun; figs need at least 6–8 hours daily. Avoid deep shade from tall trees. Slope or raised land is preferred because figs are sensitive to waterlogging. Soil should be well drained, deep and loamy—sandy loam to loam with good organic matter is best. Heavy clay soils can be used if actively drained or improved with organic matter and raised beds.
