For smallholders and peri-urban growers, edible bamboo can be a low-input perennial crop that gives both shoots for fresh sale and poles for construction or fencing.

Choose the right varieties

Select species that are known for good-tasting, low-fibre shoots and that tolerate local soils and heat. For growers in and around Indore, consider clump-forming tropical species rather than running bamboos to reduce spread and management problems.

  • Bambusa vulgaris – widely available, fast growing, shoots mild-flavoured when processed quickly.
