  • Value addition: Local processing—cleaning, freezing pulp, making sweets or ready-to-eat pulp—can capture higher margins but requires food safety compliance and investment in cold storage and packaging.
  • Market development: Identify buyers (local markets, specialty retailers, exporters) in advance. Build relationships based on consistent quality and delivery timing—durian commands premium prices only when quality and supply timing are reliable.

Economics and risk management

Durian is a long-term investment. Trees may take 4–8 years to bear commercial-sized crops depending on nursery stock and management. Plan for the following:

  • Staged planting: Start with a small commercial block and scale up if trials succeed.
  • Diversify income: Intercrop with short-term crops or keep a mixed orchard to spread income and reduce total risk.
  • Insurance and contracts: Explore crop insurance and forward contracts with buyers to manage price and production risk where available.
