Choose the right varieties

Variety choice determines whether you get fresh fruit, semi-dry dates or processing material. In humid coastal areas like Goa, choose varieties that are relatively tolerant of humidity and have shorter fruiting seasons to reduce disease pressure.

  • Barhee – popular for fresh, soft dates and relatively early harvest; good for local markets.
  • Khadrawy – soft-to-semi-dry, flavorful, and commonly grown outside strict desert conditions.
  • Medjool – premium, large fruits but needs careful management and more disease vigilance.

Date palms are dioecious—male and female flowers occur on separate trees. Natural wind pollination is unreliable in humid, sheltered coastal orchards, so hand pollination is standard for good yields.

  • Maintain a ratio of one male to 20–30 female palms for sufficient pollen; keep a few male palms evenly distributed across the orchard.
  • Collect male spathes when flowers are mature but before pollen release; dry lightly and shake to collect pollen or use a soft brush for hand pollination.
  • Pollinate female flowers early in the anthesis window and repeat over a few days for better fruit set. In professional setups, pollen can be stored short-term under cool, dry conditions.

Pruning, training and canopy care
