Why chamomile in Meghalaya?

Meghalaya’s cool highlands, well-distributed rainfall and numerous small holdings suit chamomile—especially the annual German chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla). Growers who manage drainage and choose the right planting window can produce high-quality flowers for dried tea, medicinal use or essential oil extraction.

Choose the right type

Two chamomiles are commonly grown: German chamomile (annual) and Roman chamomile (perennial). For commercial flower production in Meghalaya, German chamomile is the usual choice because it produces an abundance of single-season flowers with higher yields and is easier to establish from seed.

Climate and elevation

  • Best in cool, temperate to subtropical climates. Chamomile tolerates light frost but dislikes prolonged waterlogging.
  • Avoid low-lying, poorly drained plots. Slopes or raised beds are useful in Meghalaya to limit waterlogging during heavy rains.
  • Select a site with full sun to light shade; full sun gives best flower production.

Soil requirements

  • Loose, well-drained loam is ideal. Chamomile tolerates sandy to clay loams if drainage is good.

  • Nursery technique: sow seeds thinly on trays or beds in a fine, friable medium. Cover very lightly or press seeds into the surface—no deep covering. Keep the medium moist but not waterlogged until germination (7–14 days).

Transplanting and spacing

  • Transplant seedlings at 4–6 weeks when they have 3–4 true leaves and are sturdy.
  • Spacing patterns: 20–30 cm between plants in rows that are 30–45 cm apart. For denser forage-type stands adjust spacing accordingly, but avoid overcrowding to reduce disease risk.
  • Light shading during the first week after transplant can reduce transplant shock if days are hot and sunny.

Fertilizer and amendments

  • Chamomile responds well to organic fertility. Apply compost or well-rotted manure annually.
  • Apply a light dose of nitrogen after establishment to promote healthy vegetative growth; excess N delays flowering and reduces oil concentration.
  • Address phosphorus and potassium according to soil test recommendations. A balanced approach supports flower formation.
  • If soil is strongly acidic (common in Meghalaya), apply agricultural lime according to soil test to raise pH gradually.

Irrigation and water management

  • Avoid waterlogging. Provide moderate moisture—keep soil evenly moist during establishment and flowering, but do not overwater.

  • Pests: aphids and thrips can attack flowers and foliage. Monitor regularly and use mechanical controls (water sprays), neem-based products, or insecticidal soaps if thresholds are exceeded.
  • Diseases: damping-off in seedlings, root rot and powdery mildew under high humidity. Preventative measures—good drainage, proper spacing, avoid overhead irrigation, and use disease-free seed—are critical. Remove infected plants promptly.
  • Seed treatment: a light fungicidal drench for nursery seed or use biocontrols (Trichoderma) where available to reduce damping-off risk.

Flowering, harvesting and quality tips

  • Harvest when flower heads are fully formed but before they open fully—typically when the yellow disc is showing and the white rays begin to spread. Picking early morning after dew has dried gives the best oil and aroma.
  • Harvest by hand with scissors or knives; frequent picking (every 3–5 days) during peak bloom keeps quality up.
  • For dried product, avoid picking damp flowers. Transport to a drying area immediately to prevent moulding.

Drying and storage

  • Shade-dry on raised racks or mesh trays in a well-ventilated, airy place. Direct sun reduces essential oil quality and color.
  • Turn flowers regularly for even drying. Target a low moisture content to prevent mould (dry but still slightly pliable).
  • Store dried flowers in airtight containers in a cool, dark place. Avoid plastic that traps moisture—use food-grade tins, glass jars, or breathable sacks inside sealed bins.

Postharvest options and value addition

  • Dried flowers are sold to herbal tea processors, pharmacies or local traders. Quality commands better prices—clean, insect-free, well-dried flowers fetch premiums.
  • Essential oil extraction (steam distillation) adds value but requires investment and technical skill. Small groups of growers can consider collective distillation arrangements.
  • Explore niche markets: organic certification, specialty tea blends, and local wellness products can be higher-value channels.

Crop rotation and intercrops

  • Rotate chamomile with cereals, legumes or vegetables to reduce disease and pest carryover and to manage soil nutrients.
  • Intercropping with low-competition crops (e.g., coriander at low density) can provide extra income but manage competition carefully to avoid reducing chamomile flower yield.

  • Site: choose raised, well-drained beds with full sun.
  • Soil: test pH; lime if strongly acidic; add organic matter.
