Why grow chamomile in Madhya Pradesh?

Chamomile (commonly the German chamomile, Matricaria recutita) is a short-duration aromatic and medicinal crop valued for its dried flower heads and essential oil used in herbal teas, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Parts of Madhya Pradesh with mild winters and access to irrigation (central and southern districts) can produce good crops when the seasonal calendar and moisture are managed to avoid the monsoon.

Season and climate

Chamomile prefers cool, dry conditions during flowering. In Madhya Pradesh plan sowing after the monsoon when temperatures start falling—typically October to early November. The crop then develops through the cooler months and flowers in late winter to early spring (roughly February–April, depending on sowing date and local microclimate).

Soil and site selection

  • Choose well-drained soils—sandy loam to loam soils are ideal. Avoid waterlogged or heavy clay soils prone to root rots.
  • pH: slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.0–7.5) is best.
  • Good sunlight: chamomile flowers need bright light. Select open fields without heavy shade.
  • Access to irrigation: the crop needs supplemental water in winter in most parts of MP; drip irrigation helps control moisture precisely and reduces disease risk.

Varieties and seed

There are limited commercialised varieties in India; most growers use proven local seed of German chamomile. Obtain clean, certified seed from a reputable supplier or distillation unit. Seed quality matters: chamomile seeds are tiny and low-weight—store carefully.

Seed rate and sowing

  • Seed rate: low but fine—plan roughly 4–6 kg/ha for line sowing (rates vary with seeding method and seed lot viability).
  • Sowing method: the crop establishes well from direct sowing in prepared seedbeds. Use a well-tilled, firm seedbed to ensure good seed-soil contact. Broadcasting followed by light raking is possible for small plots, while precision seeding into rows (30–45 cm spacing) is better for weeding and harvesting.
  • Depth: surface to very shallow (0.5–1 cm). Chamomile seeds require light for germination; do not bury deeply.
  • Germination: keep the seedbed consistently moist until emergence; expect slow emergence compared to many vegetables.

Planting layout and spacing

Rows at 30–45 cm and plants spaced 10–20 cm within the row allow good aeration and access for hand weeding. Denser sowing increases vegetative growth at the cost of flower production and makes harvesting harder.

Nutrition and manure

  • Apply well-decomposed farmyard manure or compost at planting (5–10 t/ha) to improve soil structure and water-holding capacity.
  • Chamomile is not a heavy feeder but benefits from balanced nutrition. A moderate NPK application encourages healthy growth and flower set—typical on-farm recommendations are in the range of 40–60 kg N/ha, 20–30 kg P2O5/ha, and 20–30 kg K2O/ha, split across the season. Adjust rates according to soil tests.
  • Apply half of N and full P at or before sowing; top-dress remaining N once the crop is established (30–40 days after sowing).

Irrigation and water management

  • Chamomile needs regular moisture during establishment and vegetative growth, but excessive moisture around flowering raises disease risk and can reduce oil content.
  • Use light, frequent irrigations until flowering, then moderate irrigation to avoid water stress. Reduce irrigation frequency as flowers mature to encourage essential oil accumulation.
  • Drip irrigation is recommended where available; it conserves water and keeps foliage drier.

Weed, pest and disease management

  • Weed control: young chamomile competes poorly with aggressive weeds. Keep the first 40–60 days weed-free with shallow cultivation or hand-weeding to avoid root damage. Mulches can suppress weeds and conserve moisture.
  • Pests: common pests include aphids and thrips, which can reduce yield and oil quality. Monitor regularly; use neem oil sprays, insecticidal soaps, or selective pesticides if thresholds are exceeded. Encourage beneficials (ladybirds, lacewings).
  • Diseases: root rots (Phytophthora, Pythium) in poorly drained soils, and foliar diseases like powdery mildew can occur. Maintain good drainage and avoid overhead irrigation during cool, humid periods. Use crop rotation (avoid continuous brassica or solanaceous planting) and sanitation.

Flowering and harvest timing

Chamomile flowers are the marketable product. Harvesting at the right stage is critical for quality:

  • Harvest when a majority (about 50–70%) of the disk florets are open and the rays are extended but before the heads start to brown—this is when essential oil content and aroma are highest.
  • Multiple pickings: depending on sowing date and plant vigor, fields may be picked 2–3 times at 7–10 day intervals.
  • Method: hand-plucking individual heads or cutting with sickles just above the base of the flower stalk are common. Mechanical harvesters are uncommon for chamomile in smallholder situations because of the delicate heads.

Post-harvest handling and drying

  • Process flowers immediately: flowers left in sun or damp conditions lose oil and color. Move freshly harvested heads to a shaded, airy area quickly.
  • Drying: air-dry in thin layers in a shaded, well-ventilated space or use low-temperature forced-air dryers (temperature 30–40°C). Drying should be fast enough to prevent mould but gentle to retain volatile oils and color.
  • Moisture target: reduce moisture to around 8–10% for storage. Properly dried flowers retain aroma and resist spoilage.
  • Storage: store dried heads in clean, dry jute or breathable bags in a cool, dark place. Avoid plastic bags that trap moisture. For oil extraction, store under conditions that minimise exposure to heat and light.

Essential oil extraction

Many growers sell dried flowers; others extract essential oil via steam distillation. Oil yields are low but valuable—commercial distillation units or contract distillers are often the best route for smallholders. If you plan to distill, co-ordinate volumes and timing with a processing unit to avoid storing large wet loads.

Quality parameters buyers look for

  • Clean, mature, well-dried flower heads with good color and typical chamomile aroma.
  • Low foreign matter and absence of mould or fermentation.
  • Proper documentation if selling to pharmaceutical or export markets (traceability, pesticide-free claims require testing).

Marketing and selling avenues in Madhya Pradesh

  • Local herbal traders and mandis: good for small volumes of dried flowers.
  • Essential oil distillation companies: many buy dried flowers by contract or at harvest—approach distillers in Madhya Pradesh or neighbouring states for price and collection.
  • Pharma/cosmetic processors and tea blenders: these buyers demand consistent quality and may offer contracts.
  • Value addition: small-scale packaging of dried chamomile tea or tying up with cooperatives increases margins but requires market linkages and branding.
  • Collectives/cooperatives: pooling harvests to reach distillers or exporters improves bargaining power and ensures consistent quality.

Economics and tips from the field

Chamomile can fit well into a winter crop rotation in Madhya Pradesh, providing an off-season cash crop where irrigation is available. Costs and returns depend heavily on yield, drying losses and prevailing prices. Practical tips from growers:

  • Start small to learn the crop’s rhythm—flower timing, drying needs and buyer requirements.
  • Visit a distillation unit or buyer before sowing to understand quality expectations and agree collection logistics and price terms.
  • Keep detailed records of inputs, dates of sowing and harvests, and drying conditions—this helps improve quality over seasons.
  • Prioritise clean harvesting and gentle handling—buyers pay for clean, undamaged heads.

Common pitfalls to avoid

  • Delaying harvest until heads brown—this lowers oil quality.
  • Poor drying—sun-drying or uneven, slow drying invites mould and loss of aroma.
  • Ignoring drainage—waterlogging during establishment causes root rot and plant loss.
