  • Protected from strong winds and direct runoff from roads or livestock areas.
  • Water source that can be controlled—spring, stream with intake, or well with supply tanks.
  • Good soil (clay-loam) that holds water. Newly excavated ponds should be puddled and tested for seepage.

  • pH and alkalinity: keep within neutral to slightly alkaline range; sudden swings stress fish.
  • Water exchange: partial water renewal helps control ammonia and maintain quality—do this carefully to avoid losing planktonic food and to conserve water in dry seasons.

Disease prevention and biosecurity

Prevention is far easier than treatment. Practical measures:

  • Quarantine new seed for several days in a separate tank or pond and observe for abnormal behavior, lesions or mortality.
  • Maintain cleanliness around the pond: prevent domestic animals and untreated effluents from entering water.
