This guide focuses on practical steps you can take from site selection through to harvest and sale.

Site selection and pond preparation

Choose ponds or earthen tanks with reliable water supply, minimal pollution risk and good water-holding capacity. Key considerations:

  • Water source: Use canal, river, well, or treated municipal water. Avoid water with industrial discharge or heavy silt load without treatment.
  • Pond bottom and banks: Well-leveled bottoms, sound embankments and good drainage reduce losses at harvest and help manage water quality.
  • Access and logistics: Easy access for feed delivery, fingerling transport and buyers is essential.

Before stocking, dry the pond for a short period if possible, remove unwanted fish and weeds, then apply lime to adjust pH and reduce pathogens according to local extension advice.

Nursery and seed procurement

  • Feed quantity: Feed according to fish size and appetite. Overfeeding pollutes water; underfeeding slows growth. Feed twice daily in cooler months and three times in warmer months when metabolism is higher.

  • Remove excess weeds and floating debris to maintain oxygen exchange.
  • Use aeration in intensive ponds or during hot months and at night when DO drops.
  • Partial water exchange can help if waste accumulates, but avoid large sudden changes in water chemistry.

Keep pH stable; sudden shifts stress fish. Lime applications can be used to correct acidic soils or water but follow local guidelines on rates.

Disease prevention and routine health checks

Prevention and early detection are cheaper than treatment. Practical routines:

  • Quarantine new stock and observe for signs of parasites, lesions or abnormal behavior before introducing to main ponds.
  • Maintain good hygiene during feeding and handling. Clean nets and equipment between ponds.
  • Watch for common signs of trouble: off-feed, listless behavior, skin lesions, excessive slime, fin erosion, or sudden mortality spikes. Contact local fish health services before using treatments.

Avoid routine antibiotic or chemical use without diagnosis and professional guidance.

Growth monitoring and grading

Record keeping and economics

Keep simple, regular records: stocking dates and densities, feeds used and quantities, water-quality notes, growth samples, mortalities, sales and prices. These records let you identify which practices improve profit and where costs can be reduced.

  • Overstocking without aeration or quality feed—leads to poor growth and disease.
