Broccoli is a high-value, cool-season brassica that can fetch good prices when timed to avoid peak supply. In the Gangetic Plains, its success depends on choosing the right sowing window, careful nutrient and irrigation management, and timely pest control. This guide focuses on what growers need to know from sowing to market.

Site, soil and climate

Choose well-drained plots with good tilth. Broccoli prefers neutral to slightly acidic soils (pH 6.0–7.5). Heavy, waterlogged soils or compacted seedbeds will reduce head size and increase disease risk. The crop does best in cool weather; in the Gangetic Plains this usually means planting for a winter crop (sowing mid-September to November for harvest from November through February depending on variety and altitude) or for an early spring crop where local frost risk is low.

Soil preparation

  • Avoid bruising and sunscald. Trim stems and wrap or pack in crates that prevent crushing.
  • Storage life depends on temperature and humidity—broccoli is chilling-sensitive below certain temperatures but keeps best at cool, humid conditions. For short-distance markets, rapid delivery after cooling is usually sufficient.

Market timing and quality determine returns more than maximum yield. Practical tips:

  • Understand local demand: restaurants and retail outlets often prefer tight, uniform heads. Processors may accept different sizes but require regular supply and quality standards.
  • Time harvests to supply gaps in local markets, such as cooler months when other producers have finished, to capture better prices.
  • Maintain consistent quality and pack size; buyers value dependable supply over occasional large volumes.
  • Collect buyer feedback—if market prefers a particular head size or stem length, adjust spacing and harvest cut accordingly.
