Is tea suitable for your site?

Before committing land and labour, check these fundamentals:

  • Climate: Tea prefers mild temperatures without prolonged frost. In Punjab, look for cooler foothill zones, river valleys or sites with good wind protection. Microclimates with partial shade are best where summer heat is severe.
  • Rainfall and irrigation: Tea needs distributed moisture. If your area has dry spells, ensure reliable irrigation. Avoid waterlogged soils.
  • Soil: Deep, friable, well-drained soils with good organic matter are ideal. Slightly acidic to neutral pH is preferred; alkaline soils are more challenging and need amendments.

  • Selling green leaf: Lower initial capital; you must meet factory quality standards and negotiate price based on grade and weight.
  • Small-scale processing: Makes higher-value products (orthodox tea, specialty green tea) but needs investment in withering, rolling, drying and sorting equipment and reliable markets for finished product.
  • Direct or niche markets: Specialty teas (hand-rolled, organic, flavoured) can earn premiums but require consistent quality, packaging and marketing skills.

Marketing and farmer strategies

  • Know your buyer: Build relationships with local factories or brokers. Understand grading, acceptance criteria and payment terms.
  • Record keeping: Track input costs, labour, yields and quality over time. This informs decisions on pruning cycles, fertiliser rates and investment in processing equipment.
  • Value addition: If you can process to a stable, branded product, small-volume specialty teas often command better margins than commodity green leaf.

  • Planting on marginal sites: Don’t force tea onto truly unsuitable land—soil and microclimate matter more than enthusiasm.
