Why kodo millet in the Thar?

Kodo millet (Paspalum scrobiculatum / sometimes referred under local names) is a resilient cereal suited to low-rainfall, sandy soils. In the Thar Desert it fits mixed systems: it needs little water, tolerates poor soil fertility and can provide fodder, grain for household food security and a marketable crop when managed for quality.

Site and soil

Choose fields with reasonable drainage — kodo does not like waterlogging. Sandy loam to light sandy soils common in the Thar are acceptable if you focus on moisture conservation. Avoid compacted pans; if present, loosen subsoil where possible to improve root penetration and moisture storage.

Varieties and seed selection

Use locally adapted and certified seed if available. Farmers’ selections that have performed well under your local conditions are often best — they will have tolerance to local pests and the specific drought pattern. Inspect seed for purity, insect damage and mould. If you save seed, retain from the healthiest, well-filled heads and from plants that matured uniformly under farm conditions.

Land preparation and moisture conservation

  • Prepare a firm, level seedbed. Deep tillage can increase evaporation in sandy soils; aim for minimal but effective tillage that breaks crusts and removes weeds.
  • Conserve moisture: use contour bunds, ridges or tie-ridging on slopes to capture runoff. In flat areas, shallow broad beds with furrows can reduce runoff losses.
  • Where available, incorporate well-decomposed farmyard manure at 2–4 t/ha before sowing to improve water-holding capacity and starter nutrients.

Sowing time and method

Timing depends on rainfall pattern. In the Thar, sow kodo with the onset of reliable rains so seedlings establish quickly; late sowing increases risk of poor grain filling. Typical sowing is with the main monsoon rains, but in marginal years aim for early-season moisture.

  • Seed rate: use a light seed rate because kodo tillers well — roughly 3–8 kg/ha for drilled sowing or 4–10 kg/ha for broadcasting depending on seed size and desired plant density.
  • Spacing: if drilling, use 20–30 cm row spacing. Narrow rows increase competition with weeds but can give higher yields under good management.
  • Sowing depth: 2–3 cm is sufficient in sandy soils; deeper placement risks poor emergence.

Fertiliser and amendments

Kodo responds to modest nutrient additions. Soils in the Thar are often low in organic matter and available phosphorus.

  • Basal application: apply a small dose of phosphorus (single superphosphate or rock phosphate where available) at sowing to help early root growth — typical smallholder rates are in the range of 20–40 kg P2O5/ha when feasible.
  • Nitrogen: split applications are better. A modest basal dose followed by one top-dress at tillering supports grain filling. Avoid excessive N; it increases lodging and delays maturity.
  • Organic matter: incorporate farmyard manure or compost whenever possible. This improves water absorption and nutrient buffering in sandier soils.

Irrigation strategy

Kodo is drought-tolerant and often grown rainfed. Where supplemental water is available, prioritise early-life stages (germination and tillering) and flowering to improve tiller survival and grain set.

  • Rainfed cropping: rely on moisture conservation measures. Avoid unnecessary soil disturbance that dries the topsoil.
  • Supplemental irrigations: one at tillering and one at booting/early flowering will benefit grain development; avoid late-stage excessive irrigation that can reduce grain quality or cause lodging.

Weed management

Weeds are the main yield reducer in early stages. In small plots, hand-weeding when the crop is 15–25 days old and again at 40–50 days is effective. If using inter-row spacing, mechanical inter-cultivation helps. Mulching with crop residues or using cover crops in rotation can suppress weeds and conserve moisture.

Pests and diseases — field signs and simple controls

  • Pests: stem borers and shoot flies can attack young plants in some areas; watch for dead hearts and stunted seedlings. Remove and burn infested residues and maintain field hygiene. Early sowing into moist soil reduces pest pressure.
  • Birds: birds can strip heads at maturity. Use scare tactics, temporary netting if economically feasible, or stagger harvests to reduce losses.
  • Diseases: common issues include seedling blights and grain mould under humid conditions. Use healthy seed, avoid delayed harvest, and dry grain promptly after threshing.

Crop rotation and intercropping

Rotate kodo with legumes (mung, cowpea) or oilseeds to break pest cycles and improve soil fertility. Intercropping with short-duration legumes can provide ground cover, reduce weeds and add nitrogen. Avoid continuous kodo cropping on the same field.

Harvesting

Harvest when grains are hard and heads have turned straw-coloured but before shattering or heavy bird attack. In dry conditions, threshing can be delayed a few days; in humid conditions, harvest promptly to avoid mould.

  • Cut heads with a sickle, bundle and sun-dry for 2–3 days until moisture drops. Avoid excessive sun exposure that can shatter grains.
  • Thresh carefully — traditional beating or trampling works. Mechanical threshers designed for small cereals can speed the process and reduce losses.

Post-harvest drying and cleaning

Dry grain to safe storage moisture (generally low single-digit moisture percentages) before storage to avoid mould and insect problems. Clean grain by winnowing, sieving and, if available, using gravity separators to improve market quality by removing stones and inferior grains.

Storage

Store in clean, dry, well-ventilated structures elevated from the ground. Use airtight containers or hermetic bags to protect against insects. Treat storage areas for rodents and maintain good hygiene — don’t store damp grain or seed from diseased plants.

Quality traits buyers look for

Markets pay for uniform, clean, well-dried grain. Remove admixtures (other millets, stones) and keep grain free from mould or off-odours. Smallholders who can deliver clean, bagged grain often get a better price than loose, mixed lots.

Selling and marketing tips

  • Know your buyers: local village traders, dhani-level collectors, millet processors and seed buyers have different quality needs. Seed buyers require purity and germination records; processors want clean, uniform grain.
  • Collective marketing: working with a farmer group or cooperative helps in aggregating small volumes to meet buyer minimums and reduces transport costs.
  • Value addition: dehulling, polishing and packaging for retail can increase returns where markets exist. Even simple cleaning and bagging raises price compared with selling loose grain.
  • Timing: sell after avoiding immediate post-harvest gluts when prices are lowest, but not so late that storage costs or quality loss outweigh price gains.

Risk management and practical notes

  • Seed backup: retain a small reserve of clean seed for the next season.
  • Record-keeping: note sowing dates, seed rates, fertiliser and input use linked to field performance to refine practices year-to-year.
  • Soil health: sustained productivity in the Thar requires building organic matter and preventing erosion through contour measures and vegetative barriers.
