Jackfruit (Kathal) Farming in Bihar: Practical Step-by-Step Guide

Why grow jackfruit in Bihar?

Jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus) suits Bihar’s subtropical climate when you choose the right site and variety. Trees are long-lived, give marketable fruit and can fit in orchards, homesteads or agroforestry systems. With proper soil selection, planting technique and upkeep you can establish a profitable stand that begins producing in a few years.

Site and soil requirements

  • Climate: Jackfruit prefers warm, humid conditions with a distinct dry period for flowering. It tolerates Bihar’s monsoon climate but needs protection from prolonged waterlogging.
  • Soil: Deep, well-drained loams or sandy loams are best. Avoid heavy clay or poorly drained spots. pH 6.0–7.5 is ideal.
  • Topography: Gentle slopes with good drainage are preferable; avoid low-lying fields that collect water.
  • Sunlight: Full sun or light shade. Good light improves flowering and fruit quality.

Variety selection

Select varieties adapted to local conditions. Local farmer-preferred cultivars often perform best for flavour and market preference. If you can source grafted material from a reliable nursery, choose high-yielding and early-bearing clones where available.

Propagation: grafting vs seed

  • Seedlings: Easy and cheap but variable. Trees from seed take longer to fruit (5–10 years) and may not be true to parent type.
  • Grafted saplings: Preferred for uniformity, earlier bearing (2.5–4 years) and predictable fruiting. Use cleft or veneer grafting on seedling rootstocks.
  • Rooted cuttings/air layering: Used locally for certain varieties but requires skill and careful aftercare.

Planting layout and spacing

Spacing depends on system and variety:

  • For large traditional trees: 8–10 m x 8–10 m (around 100–125 trees/ha) to allow canopy expansion.
  • For high-density or managed orchards with pruning: 6–8 m x 6–8 m (around 150–250 trees/ha).
  • Intercropping: In young orchards you can intercrop with short-duration vegetables or pulses until canopy closure.

Planting steps

  1. Timing: Plant at the onset of monsoon so young trees establish quickly. In Bihar this is often late June–July depending on local rains.
  2. Pit preparation: Dig pits 60–75 cm cubed, fill with topsoil mixed with well-rotted farmyard manure (10–15 kg) and 100–200 g single super phosphate.
  3. Planting: Set the grafted sapling slightly above soil level, firm the soil, and water immediately. Mulch around the base with straw or leaf litter to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
  4. First year care: Protect from strong sun and animals. Keep soil moist but not waterlogged.

Watering and mulching

  • Young trees need regular watering during dry periods—weekly or more depending on soil and weather—until established (1–2 years).
  • Mature trees are fairly drought-tolerant but yield and fruit size improve with supplemental water during dry spells and especially during fruit development.
  • Mulch 5–10 cm thick around the tree (but keep 15–20 cm gap from trunk) to retain moisture and build soil organic matter.

Nutrition and fertilizer schedule

Adjust inputs depending on soil test. General guidelines per mature tree:

  • Establishment years (1–3): Apply well-rotted FYM/compost annually (20–40 kg/tree) and a balanced fertilizer (NPK 10:10:10) in split doses.
  • Mature trees: Apply FYM/compost (40–100 kg/tree/year) and split applications of N, P and K according to growth stage. A typical approach is to split the annual dose into 2–3 applications—early vegetative flush, pre-flowering and early fruit growth.
  • Micronutrients: Foliar spray of zinc, boron or manganese if deficiency symptoms appear. Boron can help fruit set in many fruit crops, but use with care.

Pruning, training and canopy management

  • Formative pruning: In the first 2–4 years select a strong central leader or umbrella framework (3–4 scaffold branches) to create a manageable canopy.
  • Maintenance pruning: Remove dead, crossing or weak branches annually. Thin inner canopy to improve light and air penetration.
  • Height control: Regular pruning keeps harvesting manageable and reduces wind damage. Avoid over-pruning fruiting wood.

Pest and disease management

Regular scouting and prompt action are critical:

  • Fruit fly: Watch for oviposition and fruit maggots. Use clean harvesting, sanitation (remove infested fruit), bait traps and timely harvest to reduce losses.
  • Stem borers and wood borers: Monitor trunk holes and branch damage. Remove and destroy affected wood, use pheromone or light traps where available, and consider targeted insecticide treatments following local recommendations.
  • Phytophthora/root rot: Avoid waterlogging, improve drainage, and remove infected trees. Use disease-free planting material and treat soil in badly affected sites.
  • Bacterial/fungal leaf spots: Maintain canopy hygiene and apply appropriate fungicides as needed. Good airflow reduces disease pressure.

Pollination and fruit set

Jackfruit has separate male and female florets on the same inflorescence; good tree vigour and pollinator activity (bees) increase fruit set. Avoid heavy nitrogen application during bloom which may promote vegetative growth at the expense of flowering.

Harvesting and post-harvest handling

  • Time to bearing: Grafted trees often begin bearing in 2–4 years; seedling trees take longer.
  • Harvest indicators: Mature but not overripe fruits have a change in surface colour and emit a characteristic aroma. For green use (vegetable jackfruit) harvest earlier when fruit size is suitable.
  • Harvest technique: Use a pole with a knife or cut fruit with a sharp knife leaving some stem. Handle carefully—fruit are heavy and bruise easily.
  • Storage and transport: Keep cool, avoid stacking. For distant markets, harvest at a firm but ripe stage and pack in ventilated crates to reduce bruising. Processing (riping, peeling, value-added products) can add market options.

Yields and economics

Yields vary greatly with variety, tree age and management. Well-managed trees under good conditions can produce steady yields once they reach maturity. Evaluate local market demand for ripe fruit, green (vegetable) jackfruit and processed products to plan planting density and variety choice.
