  3. Amending the Planting Pit: This is the most crucial step. For each tree, you will dig a pit. The standard size is 60cm x 60cm x 60cm (2ft x 2ft x 2ft). A larger pit is always better. While digging, keep the topsoil and subsoil separate.
  4. Creating the Ideal Soil Mix: Let the pits bake in the sun for a couple of weeks. Before refilling, you will prepare a special mixture. For one pit, combine the excavated topsoil with:
    • 15-20 kg of well-decomposed Farm Yard Manure (FYM) or high-quality Vermicompost: This is essential for adding organic matter, improving soil structure, and providing slow-release nutrients.

This enriched, well-drained pocket of soil will give your sapling the perfect environment to establish a strong root system before it ventures into the surrounding native soil.

Propagation and Sowing: From Seed to Sapling

While Gulmohar can be propagated through cuttings, this method is less reliable and not practical for large-scale commercial farming. The most robust, common, and cost-effective method is raising saplings from seed. This process requires patience and a key technique to overcome the seed’s natural defences.

Seed Collection and the Secret of Scarification

The journey begins with large, woody seed pods that turn dark brown or black as they mature on the tree around April to June. Collect these pods before they split open. Each pod contains 20-40 hard, oblong seeds.

A Gulmohar seed has an extremely hard, waxy coat (testa) that prevents water from entering. In nature, this coat breaks down slowly over time. For farming, we must speed up this process through scarification. A seed that is not scarified simply will not germinate. There are three effective methods:

  1. Hot Water Treatment (Safest and most common): Bring water to a rolling boil and then take it off the heat. Drop the seeds into this hot water and let them soak for 24 to 48 hours. As the water cools, the seeds will absorb it and swell up to two or three times their original size. Only the swollen seeds are viable for sowing. Discard any that do not swell.
  2. Mechanical Scarification: For smaller quantities, you can use a metal file or rough sandpaper to carefully nick or abrade a small part of the seed coat. Be careful not to damage the inner kernel (cotyledon). After nicking, soak the seeds in plain water for 24 hours. They should swell readily.
  3. Acid Scarification (For professionals only): This involves a brief dip in concentrated sulfuric acid for 10-15 minutes, followed by a thorough rinsing. This method is fast and highly effective but is extremely dangerous and requires proper safety equipment and handling procedures. It is not recommended for most farmers.

Raising Healthy Saplings in a Nursery

Direct sowing in the field is risky. It is far better to raise saplings in a controlled nursery environment for 6 to 12 months before transplanting.

  • Potting Medium: Prepare a well-draining potting mix. A standard formula is a 1:1:1 ratio of red soil (or local soil), sand, and well-rotted FYM or vermicompost. Avoid using 100% black cotton soil as it will compact in the bags.
  • Sowing in Polybags: Use standard nursery polybags (6×4 inches or larger). Fill them with your prepared potting mix. Sow one scarified, swollen seed per bag at a depth of about 1-2 cm.
  • Germination and Care: Water the bags gently and keep them in a partially shaded area. Germination will occur within 7 to 21 days. The young seedlings are tender. Protect them from harsh sun and heavy rain. Water as needed to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.
  • Ready for Transplanting: The saplings will be ready for transplanting to the main field when they reach a height of 1 to 2 feet (30-60 cm) and have a sturdy, pencil-thick stem. This usually takes between 6 months to a year. Raising them for a full year results in a more robust plant that can better withstand the shock of transplanting.

Step-by-Step Guide: Transplanting and Plantation Management

This is where your preparation meets action. Proper transplanting technique is critical for the survival and long-term health of your plantation. Getting it right ensures a high survival rate and sets the stage for rapid growth.

  1. Step 1: Timing is Everything

    The ideal time to transplant Gulmohar saplings in Malwa is with the onset of the monsoon, typically in late June or early July. The moist soil and overcast skies reduce transplant shock and provide the young saplings with the water they need to establish their roots. Never transplant in the dry heat of summer.

    Young Gulmohar saplings have flexible stems and are vulnerable to wind and livestock. Install a sturdy stake (like a bamboo stick) next to the sapling and loosely tie the stem to it for support. Intercropping and Nutrient Management for a Healthy Plantation

A common mistake in tree farming is to view the land as unproductive until the trees mature. Practical wisdom tells us otherwise. The first few years of your Gulmohar plantation are a golden opportunity for generating income and improving soil health through intercropping.

The Intercropping Advantage (Years 1-3)

For the first three to four years, the Gulmohar canopy is small and allows plenty of sunlight to reach the ground. This space between the tree rows is prime agricultural real estate.

Suitable Intercrops for Malwa: Choose crops that are compatible with the local climate and have a short duration.

  • Legumes: This is the best choice. Crops like Soybean, Moong (Green Gram), Urad (Black Gram), and Groundnut thrive in Malwa. They provide a cash income while also fixing nitrogen in the soil, which benefits the Gulmohar trees.
  • Medicinal Plants: Low-growing, shade-tolerant herbs like Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) or Kalmegh (Andrographis paniculata) can be excellent high-value intercrops as the canopy begins to close.
  • Vegetables: Short-duration vegetables can be planted, but they may require more intensive management and irrigation.

Intercropping provides multiple benefits: it generates annual income while you wait for the trees to grow, it naturally suppresses weeds, it reduces soil erosion, and the cultivation activities for the intercrop (like tilling and fertilizing) also benefit the trees.

Nutrient Management: Feed the Tree, Not Just the Soil

Gulmohar is not a greedy feeder, but a strategic nutrient plan, especially in the early years, will dramatically accelerate growth and trunk development.

Initial Fertilization: The FYM and SSP added to the pit at planting time will provide for the first six months to a year.

Annual Fertilizer Schedule:

  • Year 1-3 (Growth Phase): The focus is on establishing a strong frame. Apply 15-20 kg of FYM or 5 kg of vermicompost per tree per year. This should be applied in the basin around the tree just before the monsoon. To give a boost, you can also apply 100-150 grams of a balanced NPK fertilizer (like 12:32:16 or 19:19:19) per tree once a year, right at the start of the monsoon.
  • Year 4-8 (Maturing Phase): As the tree grows, its nutrient needs increase. Increase the FYM application to 25-30 kg per tree annually. The chemical fertilizer dose can be increased to 200-250 grams. By this stage, the tree’s own leaf litter will start contributing significantly to soil organic matter.
  • Mature Trees (8+ years): Well-established trees in a plantation with good leaf litter decomposition are largely self-sufficient. However, a biennial application of 30-40 kg of FYM per tree will maintain soil health and tree vigour. Observe your trees; if the leaves appear pale or yellowish, it may indicate a nitrogen deficiency, which can be corrected with a small dose of urea or a top dressing of FYM.

Always apply fertilizers in the circular basin, slightly away from the main trunk, and mix it lightly into the topsoil. If applying before the monsoon, the rain will carry the nutrients down to the root zone.

  2. Powdery Mildew: In periods of high humidity, a white, dusty fungal growth can appear on leaves. It is generally not fatal but can reduce the tree’s photosynthetic ability.
    • Control: Improve air circulation through pruning. If the infection is severe, spray with wettable sulphur (2 grams per litre of water) or a bio-fungicide containing Trichoderma viride.

Structural and Environmental Challenges

  • Formative Pruning (Years 2-5): This is the most important pruning phase. Regularly remove the lower branches from the main trunk, up to about 50% of the tree’s height. This encourages the tree to grow vertically and produces a clear, knot-free bole which is the most valuable part for timber. Also, remove any competing leader stems to maintain a single, dominant trunk. Use sharp, clean tools to make cuts flush with the trunk.
  • Maintenance Pruning (Mature Trees): Once the main trunk is formed, pruning is less frequent. Focus on removing any dead, diseased, or damaged branches. Thinning out the canopy slightly by removing crossing or rubbing branches can improve light penetration and reduce wind resistance. The best time to prune is after the flowering and pod-setting season is over.

  • Timber: This is the primary, long-term harvest. A Gulmohar tree is typically ready for timber harvesting between 15 to 25 years of age. The exact time depends on soil, climate, and management practices. A well-managed tree will have a trunk girth of 90-120 cm at breast height. Harvesting involves felling the tree, de-branching it, and cutting the main trunk into logs of marketable size.

Yield and Economic Projections: A Realistic Outlook

Gulmohar farming is a patient farmer’s game. The financial returns are spread out, but they are steady and require low inputs after the initial years.

Let’s consider a one-acre plantation with a spacing of 5m x 5m (160 trees).

  • Intercropping Income (Years 1-3): This will be your primary income initially. Depending on the crop (e.g., soybean), you can expect to earn a profit of ₹15,000 – ₹25,000 per acre annually, covering the maintenance costs of the plantation.
