It is generally hardier than Arabica, tolerates higher temperatures and moisture, and can give reliable returns under suited management. This guide focuses on practical steps growers will use from land selection through to processing.

Site selection and land preparation

Choose a site with:

  • Mean annual temperature in the warm range with minimal cold stress.
  • Well-distributed annual rainfall; supplemental irrigation helps during dry spells.
  • Good drainage — Robusta plants dislike waterlogged soils.
  • Partial shade or a plan for shade trees; young plants need protection from hot sun.

Soil: Deep, loamy to clay-loam soils with good organic matter are preferred. pH 5.5–6.5 is ideal. Avoid rocky, shallow soils unless creating raised beds.

Land preparation: Clear weeds but retain useful shade trees where possible. Prepare planting pits 45–60 cm wide and deep, filled with topsoil mixed with compost. Give the site a season to rest if possible and allow cover crops (e.g., legumes) to build soil organic matter.

  • Maintain plant vigor with proper nutrition and irrigation — stressed plants are more susceptible.
  • Sanitation: collect and destroy fallen berries and pruned material that can harbor pests.
  • Monitor regularly and use traps or biological controls for berry borer where practical. Follow recommended chemical controls sparingly and according to local extension guidance.
  • Use resistant/tolerant varieties and clean planting material to limit disease spread.
  • For nematodes, consider soil fumigation only when necessary and combine with organic matter additions and resistant rootstocks if available.

Intercropping and farm diversification

Many growers plant Robusta with intercrops during early years to generate income and provide shade. Good companion crops include banana, black pepper, and shade trees. Match intercrop choice to water availability and market access, and adjust pruning and nutrient plans to support both crops.

Flowering, harvesting and post-harvest handling

Flowering follows rainfall patterns and can be staggered. Harvest ripe cherries selectively for better quality. For Robusta, stripping (removing all cherries) is common commercially, but selective picking yields higher quality if labor is available.

Post-harvest options:

  • Wet processing (pulping, fermenting, washing, drying) gives cleaner beans and is commonly used for higher-quality Robusta.
  • Dry processing (natural) is simpler — cherries dried whole on raised beds or patios, then hulled — but demands careful drying to avoid mould and uneven fermentation.

Dry cherries to safe moisture (<12%) before storage. Store parchment or green beans in cool, dry, well-ventilated conditions to preserve quality.

Labour, costs and economics

Coffee is labour-intensive: planting, pruning, pest control, and harvesting require workers or family labour. Early years need investment in planting material, shade, and soil improvement. Yields and returns vary widely with management, site, and markets — keep careful records of costs and yields to evaluate profitability and identify efficiency improvements.

Record-keeping and continuous improvement

Maintain simple records: planting dates, variety, fertilizer and pesticide applications, pruning, rainfall/irrigation, harvest dates and volumes, and post-harvest processing details. Use those records to tweak spacing, nutrition and pest control across seasons.

  • Confirm site drainage, shade plan and water availability before planting.
  • Source healthy, certified planting material from reputable nurseries.
  • Prepare pits with compost and plant at a spacing suited to your management intensity.
