Choosing site and soil preparation

Pick a site with good drainage and at least four to six hours of sunlight. Avoid low-lying patches that remain waterlogged after rain. Brinjal tolerates a range of soils but prefers deep, friable loam with moderate fertility. In Meghalaya many soils are acidic—test pH and lime where needed to bring pH toward neutral.

  • Mulch rows with organic mulch or black plastic to retain soil moisture during dry spells, suppress weeds and keep fruits cleaner during rainy periods.
  • Drip irrigation is very effective on beds for dry spells and reduces leaf wetness compared with overhead irrigation—apply supplemental irrigation during prolonged dry periods to avoid flower drop.
