Elephant foot yam (Amorphophallus paeoniifolius), locally known as suran or jimikand, is a hardy tuber crop suited to Gujarat’s varied agro-climates. It commands steady local demand as a cooking tuber, processed flour source and for niche markets. When managed well it fits well into medium-to-long duration rotations and gives good returns on marginal soils where cereals struggle.

Suitable areas and climatic needs

  • Temperature: prefers warm temperatures 25–35°C during growth. Tolerates short dry spells but poor under prolonged cold.
  • Rainfall/irrigation: requires 800–1200 mm effective moisture over the season or regular irrigation; waterlogging for long periods damages corms.
  • Soils: adapts to a wide range — sandy loam to heavy clay — but best on deep, well-drained, fertile loam with good organic matter. pH 6–7.5 is ideal.
  • Suitable Gujarat zones: Saurashtra, South Gujarat and central plains with assured water or tube-well irrigation.

Varieties to consider

Choose a variety based on market preference (size, skin colour, storage), yield and seed availability. Commonly used types in India include:

  • Active growth: provide regular irrigation every 7–14 days depending on soil texture, increasing frequency on light soils and during hot spells.
  • Waterlogging: avoid prolonged waterlogging, especially during tuber formation — it causes rot. Ensure good drainage or switch to alternate furrow irrigation on heavier soils.
  • Mulching: apply organic mulch (straw, sugarcane trash) after canopy closure to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.

  • Weeding: perform 2–3 hand weedings in the first 60–90 days. Hoeing between rows at 30–45 days helps aerate soil and control weeds.
  • Pests: common pests include tuber borers, scale insects and nematodes. Monitor regularly. Remove and destroy heavily infested corms. Use pheromone traps or light traps to monitor borers. Apply neem-based or approved insecticides as per label if thresholds are exceeded.
  • Diseases: soft rot and corm rot caused by fungi/bacteria develop under wet, warm conditions. Use disease-free seed corms, avoid injury at planting, ensure drainage, and treat seed with fungicide if necessary. Leaf spot and blight can be handled with copper-based sprays when lesions appear.
  • Integrated measures: crop rotation (avoid other Amorphophallus or tuber crops consecutively), sanitation, and clean seed are the best defenses.

Crop management and growth stages

  • Vegetative phase: vigorous vegetative growth through 4–6 months; keep nutrient and moisture supply steady.
  • Tuber bulking: tuber initiation typically occurs after 5–7 months depending on variety and environment. Reduce nitrogen slightly during bulking to favour corm formation.
  • Maturity: leaves start yellowing when tuber reaches harvest size. In some systems, growers allow 9–12 months for larger market tubers or 6–8 months for early harvests.

Harvesting and yield

  • Harvest when foliage yellows and dries. Do not wait excessively after senescence as rot risk increases in humid conditions.
  • Lift corms carefully to avoid bruising. Use a spade or fork with caution near the tuber skin.
  • Yield expectations: variable — on good management and with improved planting material, commercial yields commonly range from about 15–35 t/ha of marketable corms. Actual yield depends on spacing, variety, soil fertility and pest control.

Postharvest handling and marketing

  • Cleaning: brush off excess soil; avoid washing unless market demands and tubers will be quickly sold — wetting increases rot risk.
  • Curing: store a few days in shade for wound healing before longer storage.
  • Storage: keep in cool, ventilated, dry conditions; tubers store for several weeks to months depending on cultivar and conditions.
  • Value addition: chips, flour (tuber powder) and ready-to-eat processed products increase shelf-life and market options. Small-scale processing can reduce postharvest losses and improve returns.

Economics and enterprise tips

  • Input costs: major costs are seed corms, fertilizers, irrigation and labour for planting/harvest. Seed corm quantity per hectare depends on spacing and whether whole corms or setts are used.
  • Profit drivers: seed quality, timely irrigation, good drainage, and effective pest/disease control determine profitability more than any single high input.
  • Marketing: sell into local wholesale markets, grocer chains or processors. Packaging in uniform sizes and cleanliness helps fetch better prices.
  • Risk management: stagger plantings or maintain plots with different planting dates to spread harvest and market risk.
