Successful walnut production depends on correct site choice, cultivar selection, sound orchard management and careful postharvest handling. This guide focuses on practical steps growers can apply from sowing to selling.

Climate and soil requirements

Walnuts need a distinct winter chilling period for bud break and nut set. In the Indus Valley, choose higher, cooler locations or areas with reliable winter low temperatures. Avoid low-lying, seasonally waterlogged fields.

  • Soil: deep, well-drained loams with good water-holding capacity. Avoid shallow or saline soils if possible.
  • pH: neutral to slightly alkaline soils are generally tolerated. Heavy sodic soils reduce growth and nut size.
  • Frost: late spring frosts during bud break can damage shoots and flowers; site selection and frost protection are important.

  • Collective marketing: small growers may benefit by forming cooperatives to aggregate volume, access buyers and negotiate better prices.
  • Record-keeping: track input costs, yields and sales prices to identify profitable practices and make informed decisions on investments like irrigation or drying facilities.

Economics and risk management

Walnut orchards are medium- to long-term investments. Trees take several years to reach full bearing. Mitigate risks by:

  • Starting with a pilot block before large-scale planting.
