How It Works: DY3TNet detects kiwifruits quickly, achieving a precision rate of 90%, and it does this with small hardware, making it practical for real-world use. It processes images in just 34 milliseconds and performs better with flash lighting. Additionally, the model classifies fruits into multiple categories based on whether they’re obstructed by branches or wires, helping robots avoid damage while picking.

Challenge: Kiwifruit is delicate, and any damage during picking can spoil the fruit. Manual picking techniques involve separating the fruit from its stem while ensuring the fruit doesn’t fall and bruise.

Solution: Robotics researchers have designed an end-effector (essentially a robotic hand) that mimics the way humans pick kiwifruits. The end-effector gently grasps the fruit from the sides, lifts it, and then rotates to detach it from the stem. This method was tested on Hayward kiwifruit and was found to be highly effective, with a 100% success rate in picking individual fruits without causing damage.

How It Works: The end-effector can adjust the angle between the fruit and the stem to ensure clean separation. In tests, it successfully picked kiwifruits at different times of the day and at different ripeness levels, showing its adaptability. Even kiwifruit picked with this method had no signs of damage when ripened for eating.
