Fig (Ficus carica), locally called anjeer, fits well into parts of South Karnataka where temperatures are moderate, drainage is good and winter is mild. The tree is small, drought-tolerant once established and can be grown as a family orchard crop or a small commercial block. This guide focuses on on-farm, practical steps and common-sense decisions suited to the region.

Site selection and climate

  • Temperature: Figs perform best where summers are warm and winters are not severely cold. Late frosts can damage young growth; choose sheltered sites away from frost pockets.
  • Rainfall and humidity: Figs tolerate seasonal drought but need a dry spell at fruit maturity to reduce fruit cracking and diseases. In heavy, prolonged monsoon conditions, ensure excellent air circulation and drainage.
  • Sunlight: Full sun gives the highest yields and better fruit quality. Aim for at least 6–8 hours of sun daily.
  • Slope and drainage: Gentle slopes are preferable. Avoid waterlogged soils; figs root shallowly and are sensitive to waterlogging.

Soil requirements

Figs are adaptable but prefer well-drained soils with good fertility. They grow on sandy loam to clay loam, provided drainage is adequate.

Irrigation and water management

  • Establishment: Regular irrigation is critical for the first 1–2 years. Water deeply every 7–10 days depending on soil and season.
  • Maintenance: Once established, figs are moderately drought-tolerant. Supplemental irrigation during fruit development improves size and reduces premature dropping.
  • Systems: Drip irrigation is water-efficient and helps keep canopy drier, reducing fungal risks.
  • Mulching: Apply organic mulch 5–10 cm thick around the tree (keep 10–15 cm away from trunk) to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.

Nutrition and fertilization

Base fertilizer recommendations on a soil test when possible. A general program for young trees might be:

  • At planting: 10–20 kg well-decomposed farmyard manure per plant mixed in the pit.
  • Young trees (first 2–3 years): Apply small doses of N-P-K (for example, split applications totaling roughly 50–100 g N per tree per year), increasing as the tree grows.
  • Mature trees: Apply N-P-K based on vigour and pruning response; commonly 250–500 g N per tree annually split into 2–3 applications; adjust P and K according to soil test and leaf analysis.
  • Micronutrients: Zinc and boron deficiencies can occur; monitor leaf health and correct when deficiency symptoms appear.

Training and pruning

  • Formative pruning: In the first 2–3 years, train trees to 3–4 main scaffold branches for an open vase shape that allows sun and air into the canopy.
  • Maintenance pruning: Annually remove dead, crossing or crowded branches. Thin to maintain air flow and reduce disease pressure.
  • Rejuvenation pruning: Older neglected trees can be rejuvenated by heavy pruning, but expect reduced yield for a season as the tree regrows.

Pest and disease management

  • Common pests: Fruit flies and birds can cause losses on ripening fruit. Use field sanitation, early harvesting, netting or traps for management.
