Why grow sorghum in West Bengal?

Sorghum (jowar) is a resilient cereal that handles heat, water stress and lighter soils better than many staples. In West Bengal it fits well into the kharif rotation on uplands and late-maturing lowlands where water is limited. You can grow sorghum for grain, fodder or dual-purpose harvests depending on variety and management.

Choose the right variety

Decide the end use first: grain-only varieties have compact heads and are easier to thresh; forage or dual-purpose types produce more biomass and are useful where ruminant feed is needed. Local extension services (Krishi Vigyan Kendra), state seed agencies and trusted seed dealers can tell you which released varieties perform well in your district and are resistant to common pests and diseases. Best planting window

  • Spacing: common options are 45–60 cm between rows and 10–20 cm between plants within a row for grain types. For forage, wider row spacing and higher plant density can increase biomass.
  • Methods: dibbling, line sowing with hand-held seeders or seed drills where available. Use seed treatments recommended by extension to protect against early-season pests and soil-borne diseases.

Nutrient management

Base fertilizer on soil test results if available. A general starter recommendation is modest nitrogen with phosphorus and potassium tailored to soil fertility and expected yield. Split nitrogen application: apply some at sowing and the rest at tillering/top-dressing to reduce leaching and support grain fill. Avoid excess nitrogen when growing for grain as this delays maturity and increases lodging risk.

Water management

Sorghum is drought-tolerant but benefits from moisture at key stages: establishment, tillering and heading/grain fill. In rainfed systems, ensure sowing aligns with dependable rainfall. In irrigated setups, provide one or two critical irrigations during flowering and grain filling if water is available. Avoid prolonged waterlogging.

Weed control

  • Early weed control is crucial because sorghum seedlings are slow-growing at first. Keep the field weed-free for the first 4–6 weeks.
  • Use timely hand weeding or inter-row cultivation. Where herbicides are used, follow label instructions precisely and be mindful of pre-plant or post-emergence timing.
  • Mulching or cover cropping in rotations can reduce weed pressure in subsequent seasons.

Pest and disease management

Common challenges include stem borers, shoot fly, aphids, and grain mould in humid weather. Diseases such as grain mould and leaf spots are favoured by high humidity and poor aeration. Practical measures:

  • Use tolerant/resistant varieties when available.
  • Ensure good field sanitation: remove volunteer sorghum, crop debris and alternate hosts.
  • Monitor regularly—early detection lets you act before populations explode.
  • Adopt integrated pest management: combine cultural controls (timely sowing, crop rotation), biological controls (natural enemies), and chemical sprays only when thresholds are exceeded.
  • Avoid overhead irrigation close to flowering in humid zones to reduce disease risk.

Growth stages and crop observations

Track the crop through vegetative, tillering, booting, heading and grain fill stages. Yellowing of lower leaves can indicate nutrient deficiency or drought. Stunted growth may result from poor germination, compaction, or early pest damage. Respond with soil tests, targeted fertilizer, or cultural adjustments rather than blanket remedies.

Harvesting and threshing

For grain: harvest when grain reaches physiological maturity and moisture is around 18–20% (grain should be hard). For forage: cutting at soft dough to hard dough stage balances yield and nutritive value. Use mechanical or manual methods to cut and bind heads, then dry properly to safe moisture for storage.

  • Drying: spread threshed grain thinly on clean, raised tarpaulins or floors until it reaches safe storage moisture (below 13% if possible) to avoid mould and heating.
  • Threshing: use a thresher or traditional methods; adjust settings to minimize grain breakage for market-quality produce.

Post-harvest handling and storage

Clean grain to remove chaff and damaged seed. Store in well-ventilated, rodent-proof containers. For longer storage in humid conditions, consider hermetic bags or fumigation as recommended by local authorities. For seed saving, select healthy, well-filled panicles from multiple plants to maintain genetic diversity and vigour.

Crop rotation and soil health

Rotate sorghum with legumes or green manures to rebuild soil nitrogen, break pest cycles and improve structure. Avoid continuous sorghum on the same land as this increases disease and pest carryover.

Marketing and farm economics

Decide your product target—local grain markets, feed industry or fodder sales—before planting. Grain quality (cleanliness, uniform moisture, low broken grain) influences price. Keep records of input costs, labour and yields to assess profitability and refine management the following season.

  • Sow on a slight ridge in moist upland plots to help drainage and avoid waterlogging.
  • Mix a small portion of legume seed in intercropping plots to increase overall income and soil nitrogen.
