Overview: Is cranberry realistic in the Thar?
Cranberry (Vaccinium spp.) is traditionally a cool-climate, bog-adapted crop. The Thar Desert’s heat, low rainfall, alkaline soils and extreme evaporation make open-field production impractical without major modification. That said, small-scale commercial production or high-value trials are possible if you recreate the key environmental elements: acidic, organic, moisture-retentive rootzone; moderated canopy temperature; reliable irrigation; and suitable planting material.

To lower pH, use elemental sulfur or commercial acidifying fertilizers. Apply sulfur well ahead of planting and test pH after several weeks. To maintain acidity in irrigation-prone systems, acidify irrigation water with acid injectors or periodic sulfuric acid treatments under expert guidance (handle acids carefully and legally).
Planting material and propagation
Use certified nursery-grown plugs, rooted cuttings or runners. Seed-grown plants are slow and variable. Look for cultivars described as low-chill or adapted to milder climates—trial multiple types if you can.
