Overview: Is cranberry realistic in the Thar?

Cranberry (Vaccinium spp.) is traditionally a cool-climate, bog-adapted crop. The Thar Desert’s heat, low rainfall, alkaline soils and extreme evaporation make open-field production impractical without major modification. That said, small-scale commercial production or high-value trials are possible if you recreate the key environmental elements: acidic, organic, moisture-retentive rootzone; moderated canopy temperature; reliable irrigation; and suitable planting material.

  • Acidic rootzone: cranberries need low pH (generally pH 4–5.5). Native desert soils are alkaline, so you must build a potting/bed mix and acidify.
  • Constant moisture: a damp, well-supplied root environment; cranberries tolerate waterlogged peat but also do well in consistently moist media.

Small growers can increase margins by producing jam, dried fruit blends, or frozen packs for local hotels and retailers.

  • Local high-end hotels and restaurants seeking unique local produce.
