  • Choose cool, well-drained hill sites with access to abundant clean water. Cranberries favour cool summers and a period of winter chilling; many growers in the Indian hills use north-facing slopes, valley bottoms or flat benches with stable water supply.
  • Avoid areas prone to late spring frost during flowering. Flower buds and early fruit are sensitive to freezing, so sites with good air drainage are preferable.
  • Consider altitude: microclimates in mid- to high-hills that remain cool in summer and have cold winters are generally better. Test a small plot first to confirm local suitability before expanding.

  • Organic matter: Maintain high organic matter through mulches and periodic top-dressing with composted, acidic materials. Avoid fresh manures that can raise pH or introduce weeds.
