Know the common varieties and how to choose

When people say “African yam” they often mean the white or guinea yam (Dioscorea rotundata) or related species such as D. alata (water/winged yam) and D. esculenta (lesser yam). Each has different growth habits and uses:

  • Dioscorea rotundata (white/guinea yam) – thick cylindrical tubers, preferred for markets that want dry-fleshed yam. Good where tuber quality and storage are priorities.
  • Dioscorea alata (water/winged yam) – smoother skin, sometimes higher vigor, tolerant of heavier soils and short periods of waterlogging; tubers can be more watery.
  • Dioscorea esculenta (lesser yam) – smaller plants and tubers; quicker to mature and useful for niche markets or intercropping but gives smaller individual returns.

How to choose for Assam:

  • Ask neighbours and local extension which species gave reliable tubers in your area; use locally adapted planting material where possible.
  • Match the variety to your soil: D. alata tolerates heavier, wetter soils; D. rotundata prefers well-drained loams.
