Site selection and soil preparation

Sorghum tolerates a range of soils but performs best on well-drained soils with moderate fertility and neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Avoid waterlogged fields or heavy compaction. If you are converting fields from cotton, check for residual herbicides or salinity issues that can affect germination.

  • Do a pre-plant soil test for pH, available phosphorus and potassium, and nitrate-nitrogen. Use the results to correct deficiencies before planting.

Irrigation and water management

  • Schedule irrigation to maintain soil moisture through flowering and grain fill. Water stress during flowering can reduce grain set.
  • In rainfed systems, match variety maturity to the expected season length. Early-maturing hybrids reduce the risk of late drought impact.
  • Avoid prolonged waterlogging; sorghum roots need oxygen and will be damaged by saturated soils.

Weed, pest and disease management

  • Grain harvest: Swathing or straight combining are both used. Combine settings should minimize grain damage and loss—adjust cylinder speed and concave clearance for sorghum’s smaller, rounder seed compared with wheat.
  • Forage/silage: Harvest at the recommended stage for your hybrid. Chop length, packing and ensiling practices will influence silage quality and fermentation.
  • Storage: Dry grain to safe moisture for storage and protect from rodents and insects. Forage should be stored anaerobically to preserve quality.

Assess real returns before switching acres. Sorghum can lower water and input costs compared with some crops, but yields and prices vary by year and district.

  • Compare expected gross margins of sorghum vs. cotton and other alternatives using local yield histories and input costs.
  • Identify buyers early—grain handlers, seed companies, livestock operations—so you know quality specs and delivery logistics.
  • Consider on-farm storage to time sales into stronger price windows if cashflow allows.
