Overview and suitability

Kalmegh (Andrographis paniculata) is a short-lived perennial usually grown as an annual for its bitter leaves and shoots used in traditional medicine. In South Karnataka its fast growth and adaptability fit well into small plots, rainfed gardens and irrigated beds. It prefers warm, humid conditions and can be integrated into mixed cropping systems or grown as a dedicated medicinal crop.

Varieties and planting material

There are no widely commercialized named hybrids commonly available for most growers; seed is usually sourced from local seed suppliers, agricultural universities or experienced growers. Choose seed that is:

  • Fresh (seed viability drops after a year)
  • From plants with strong vegetative growth and good leaf yield
  • Certified or from a trusted local producer when possible

Seedlings raised from seed give uniform stands. Vegetative propagation (cuttings) is possible but used less often at scale.

Site selection and soil

Kalmegh prefers:

  • Well-drained soils — loam to sandy-loam is best
  • Slightly acidic to neutral pH (5.5–7.5)
  • Full sun to light partial shade; yields can drop under dense shade

Avoid waterlogged low-lying fields; if you must use them, raise beds or plant on ridges to improve drainage.

Climate and planting time

Warm, humid weather suits kalmegh. In South Karnataka:

  • Monsoon planting (June–July) after the first rains is common for rainfed crops
  • For irrigated cultivation, you can plant in late spring or early monsoon to get a longer vegetative period

Temperatures of 20–35°C support good growth. Prolonged cool spells reduce vigor and delay harvest.

Nursery and raising seedlings

Direct seeding is possible, but a nursery ensures better stand establishment:

  • Use raised beds or trays with a well-draining medium (topsoil:compost:coarse sand = 2:1:1)
  • Sow seeds thinly and cover lightly; maintain moisture but avoid waterlogging
  • Germination occurs in 7–14 days; transplant when seedlings are 4–6 weeks old and 8–10 cm tall

Land preparation and planting

Tillage should produce a fine tilth. Incorporate well-rotted farmyard manure or compost at 5–10 t/ha before final ploughing. Typical planting patterns:

  • Row spacing: 30–45 cm between rows, 15–25 cm within row for dense planting
  • Planting depth: 1–2 cm for direct seed; transplant at same depth as nursery

On undulating fields, use contour rows to reduce erosion and conserve moisture.

Nutrient management

Kalmegh responds to modest, balanced fertilization rather than heavy N alone. A practical program for productive soils:

  • Basal: well-rotted FYM or compost 5–10 t/ha
  • Fertilizer: a balanced NPK such as 50–60 kg N, 25–40 kg P2O5 and 25–40 kg K2O per hectare, adjusted to soil test results
  • Split N: half at planting and half 30–40 days after transplant
  • Micronutrients: zinc or iron deficiency should be corrected based on leaf symptoms or testing

Organic growers can rely on compost and green manure; monitor growth and sidedress with compost tea or vermicompost if vegetative growth lags.

Irrigation and moisture management

Kalmegh prefers consistent moisture but not waterlogging:

  • For rainfed crops, ensure planting coincides with reliable rains
  • Irrigated: give 1–2 cm water every 4–7 days in hot weather; reduce frequency as plants mature
  • Mulch with straw or dry leaves to conserve soil moisture and suppress weeds

Weed management

Weeding is important in the first 45–60 days when the crop establishes:

  • Shallow hoeing or hand weeding to avoid root damage
  • Mulching reduces weed pressure and helps moisture retention
  • Avoid broad-spectrum herbicides unless label allows and you have experience with medicinal crops

Pest and disease management

Kalmegh is relatively resilient but watch for:

  • Leaf-eating caterpillars, grasshoppers and semiloopers — inspect regularly and remove manually for small plantings; use selective biopesticides (Bacillus thuringiensis) if needed
  • Jassids and aphids — monitor and use neem oil or insecticidal soaps early; encourage natural predators (ladybirds, lacewings)
  • Root rot and damping-off in poorly drained soils — avoid overwatering and improve drainage
  • Fungal leaf spots under prolonged humidity — reduce canopy wetness, ensure airflow and consider copper fungicides if economic losses occur

Always follow local guidelines and withholding periods appropriate for medicinal crops to avoid residue issues.

Crop management and pruning

Pruning or topping promotes bushy growth and fresh leaf production. For staggered harvests:

  • Topping at 40–50 days encourages side branching
  • Light pruning during the vegetative phase can increase leaf yield

Harvesting

Harvest timing depends on use. For highest vegetative biomass:

  • Start manual harvesting 70–90 days after transplant when plants are bushy and before heavy flowering
  • Cut 5–10 cm above ground to allow regrowth; kalmegh can give multiple harvests if regrowth is strong
  • If target is leaves for medicinal extracts, harvest in the morning after dew dries to reduce moisture in material

Yield expectations and economics

Yields vary with seed quality, management and season. Expect significant variation; on well-managed plots growers commonly focus on biomass and concentration of active compounds rather than absolute numbers. Before scaling up, run a small trial to measure local yields and processing costs. Key economic points:

  • Processing and drying facilities affect marketability—drying quickly and evenly preserves quality
  • Marketing: sell as fresh herb, dried leaf, or to extractors; establish buyers before expanding

Postharvest handling and drying

Rapid postharvest handling preserves quality:

  • Shade-dry leaves on raised racks with good air circulation to avoid fermentation; avoid direct sunlight for long periods which can degrade actives
  • Turn material frequently and dry until moisture is low enough for safe storage (use local guidelines or a moisture meter if available)
  • Store dried product in dry, airtight sacks in a cool place; label with date and source

Quality and safety

For medicinal crops, quality matters. Keep records of fertilizer and pesticide use, avoid unapproved chemicals, and follow buyer specifications. If possible, get your produce tested for active compound levels or sell through buyers who will test and grade material.
