Why grow elephant foot yam (suran) in the Cauvery Basin?
Elephant foot yam suits the Cauvery Basin because of its warm, humid climate and availability of canal and groundwater irrigation. It fits well on medium to heavy soils with good moisture retention and offers flexibility: a single planting yields marketable corms over a wide harvest window, which helps stagger sales and cashflow.

- Choose well-drained medium to heavy soils (clay loam to silt loam). The crop tolerates slight waterlogging for short periods but prolonged waterlogging causes rot.

- Diseases: soft rot and Phytophthora-like rots occur under poor drainage. Improve drainage, avoid waterlogging, and treat seed corms with a protective fungicidal dip if disease history exists.
Crop duration and harvesting
- Elephant foot yam matures in 8–12 months depending on variety, planting time and growing conditions. Monitor foliage — when leaves yellow and die down, corms are approaching maturity.
- Harvesting can be staged: small cormels are ready earlier while main corms take longer. Lift carefully to avoid bruises and cuts which lead to rot.
