Why grow sorghum in Nagaland?

Choose the right site and variety

  • Well-drained soils: sorghum tolerates a wide range of soils but performs poorly on waterlogged land. Avoid low-lying areas with persistent cold and fog during grain filling.
  • Altitude: Nagaland’s plains and lower hill slopes are suitable. Avoid very high cold valleys where maturity may be delayed.
  • Sunlight: choose a site with full sun for most of the day for best grain filling.

Variety selection

  • Aphids and mites: maintain field hygiene and encourage predators (ladybirds, spiders). Strong infestations may need targeted sprays; avoid prophylactic broad-spectrum insecticides.
  • Sorghum downy mildew and grain molds: use certified clean seed, rotate crops and avoid continuous sorghum on the same land. Ensure good drainage to reduce disease pressure.
  • Bird damage: protect grain heads near maturity with netting or scare devices in fields close to roosting sites.

  • Value addition: consider small-scale processing (cleaning, sorting, packaging) to get higher prices, or sell stover as packaged fodder to livestock owners.

Practical selling tips

  • Bundle grain in standardized weights to build trust with buyers. Keep records of buyers and prices for future negotiation.
  • Collect samples and pre-negotiate quality standards (moisture, broken grains). Charging by clean weight avoids disputes at delivery.
  • Cooperate with other growers: collective sales or bulk transport reduce marketing costs and improve bargaining power.

Integration and crop planning

Sorghum can be a reliable entry in a cropping plan for smallholders in Nagaland:

  • Rotate with legumes to improve soil N and break pest cycles. Groundnut, cowpea or soybean are good rotation partners where climate allows.
