Why sorghum for Punjab?

Sorghum (jowar) is drought-tolerant, fits into both kharif and late-rabi windows, and can be grown for grain, fodder or dual-purpose. In Punjab’s variable monsoon, sorghum can stabilize returns in rainfed or partially irrigated fields. This guide focuses on practical practices for small and medium growers aiming to maximise yield and profit while keeping risks low.

Variety selection

Choose varieties based on end-use (grain vs fodder), season, and water availability. Seed availability and local performance matter more than promotional names.

  • Grain varieties: Short-duration, high-harvest-index types suit single-season rainfed fields or late-sown crops. Look for well-adapted hybrids and improved OPVs available through local seed dealers and government seed schemes.
  • Dual-purpose: Taller types for grain plus good stover yield. Useful where livestock feed is important.
  • Sweet/silage types: If you plan fodder harvesting for silage, select varieties bred for higher stem sugars and biomass.

Talk to neighbouring farmers and your local Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) about performance under local conditions before buying seed.

Land preparation and sowing

Sorghum tolerates a range of soils but performs best on well-drained sandy loam to clay loam soils. Key preparation steps:

  • Plough to break hardpans and create a firm seedbed. Two tilth passes often work better than multiple shallow passes.
  • Sow when soil temperature and moisture are favourable—typically at the start of the monsoon for kharif or after harvest for late-rabi when irrigation is available.
  • Seed rate and spacing: For grain crops, use 4–6 kg/ha for hybrids and 8–10 kg/ha for OPVs with drilled rows. For manual planting, keep spacing at 45–60 cm between rows and 10–15 cm between plants. For fodder or silage, closer spacing and higher seed rates improve biomass.
  • Planting depth: 3–5 cm in retained moisture. Deeper in light soils only if moisture is deeper.

Seed treatment and establishment

  • Always use certified seed. Treat seed with a recommended fungicide and insecticide combination to protect against early pests and seed rot. Follow label rates and safety precautions.
  • Apply a starter dose of phosphorus during sowing if soil P is low. Placement with seed helps early vigour.

Nutrient management

Base fertiliser decisions on a recent soil test. General recommendations for sorghum grain (adjust to test results):

  • Nitrogen: 60–90 kg N/ha as a rule of thumb. Split application; half at sowing and remainder at tillering/early jointing.
  • Phosphorus: 30–60 kg P2O5/ha at sowing depending on soil status.
  • Potassium: Apply if soil K is low; commonly 20–40 kg K2O/ha.
  • Use organic manure or compost in combination with chemical fertilisers to improve soil structure and water retention.

For fodder crops, increase nitrogen to boost biomass, but balance with potassium and boron if deficiencies are observed.

Irrigation and water management

Sorghum’s advantage is drought tolerance, but yields respond to timely water. Key stages for moisture are germination, vegetative growth and flowering/grain filling. Manage irrigation as follows:

  • Ensure adequate moisture at planting for uniform emergence.
  • Supplement rainfall during prolonged dry spells, particularly around panicle initiation and flowering.
  • Avoid waterlogging; sorghum roots need oxygen.

Weed management

Early weed control is critical—weed competition in the first 4–6 weeks can cut yields. Tactics:

  • Pre-emergence herbicides where recommended and calibrated correctly.
  • Two hand-hoeing or inter-cultivations during early growth if labour is available.
  • Maintain clean bunds and field edges to reduce weed seed pressure.

Pest and disease management

Integrated pest management (IPM) keeps costs down and delays resistance. Scout regularly and act based on economic thresholds rather than calendar spraying.

Key pests

  • Stem borer: Watch for dead hearts during vegetative stage and whiteheads at grain fill. Use pheromone traps for monitoring; remove and destroy heavily infested plants. Consider biocontrol (egg parasitoids) and targeted insecticide at egg/early larval stages if thresholds reached.
  • Shoot fly: Typically affects seedlings leading to dead hearts. Use seed treatment, early sowing to escape peak fly activity, and destroy alternate hosts.
  • Aphids and jassids: Sap-sucking insects that transmit diseases. Encourage predators (lady beetles, lacewings), and apply insecticidal soaps or selective insecticides when populations rise sharply.
  • Grasshoppers: Outbreaks can defoliate. Early hand collection or barrier treatments work in small fields; larger outbreaks may need authorised insecticides.

Key diseases

  • Charcoal rot: Favoured by hot, dry conditions and residue retention; practise crop rotation, avoid planting into moisture-stressed soil, and maintain balanced fertilisation.
  • Grain mold: Risk increases with humid conditions during grain maturation. Harvest promptly when grain reaches safe moisture and use resistant varieties where available.
  • Smut and seedling blights: Use treated seed and discard contaminated seedlots.

Harvesting, threshing and storage

Harvest timing matters: for grain, harvest when grain moisture is 12–14% for safe storage; for fodder, harvest for desired DM content or at boot/panicle emergence for best quality silage. Mechanical combine harvesters work well for larger farms; smallholders can harvest manually but ensure timely threshing to avoid weather damage.

  • Dry grain thoroughly before storage to avoid mold and mycotoxin risk.
  • Store in well-sealed, clean, rodent-proof bags or bins. Consider fumigation if previous insect problems occurred in storage.

Ratoon management and multi-cut systems

Sorghum can produce ratoon crops in favourable conditions. For ratooning:

  • Cut at the right height to leave active buds.
  • Apply a light nitrogen top-dress after harvesting the main crop to stimulate regrowth.
  • Ratoons are riskier under water stress—use only when irrigation or moisture is reliable.

Marketing and profit tips

  • Match variety and grain quality to buyer requirements—milling, feed, or seed markets pay different premiums.
  • Aggregate with nearby growers to access larger buyers and reduce transport costs.
  • Value-add: If you have consistent volumes, consider supplying cleaned grain or chaffed fodder to get better prices.
  • Record input costs, labour, and yields for each field. Farm-level accounting helps identify which fields or management practices are most profitable.
  • Use government schemes and local extension support for seed subsidy, training, or market linkages when available.

Crop rotations and soil health

Rotate sorghum with legumes (mung, chickpea) or oilseeds to break pest cycles, improve soil nitrogen and maintain structure. Regularly apply organic manure and practice conservation tillage where possible to build resilience against drought and pests.

Checklist: seasonal actions

  • Pre-sowing: soil test, buy certified seed, treat seed, prepare seedbed.
  • Sowing: ensure correct spacing and depth, place basal P with seed.
  • Vegetative: scout weekly for pests, manage weeds, split N application.
  • Reproductive: protect flowering and grain fill from stress and pests, ensure moisture.
  • Harvest: monitor grain moisture, harvest promptly, dry and store correctly.

Final practical tips

Start small when trying a new variety or management practice; scale up what works on your soils and markets. Keep detailed notes on dates, inputs, pest outbreaks and yields—this local knowledge is more valuable than any brochure. Use IPM principles, timely irrigation and proper storage to protect both yield and profit.
