Why grow sorghum in Goa?

Sorghum (jowar) is resilient, drought-tolerant and fits well into Goa’s smallholder and mixed farming systems. Site selection and soil

Sorghum performs on a wide range of soils but prefers deep, well-drained soils with pH 5.5–7.5. In Goa you will commonly find lateritic soils and sandy loams; sorghum tolerates these, though yields respond to better fertility and moisture retention.   • Local flour mills or small processors for jowar flour demand higher quality and low moisture.
  • Seed producers: if you grow certified seed or maintain high-purity varieties, seed buyers pay a premium but require inspection and certification.

Practical selling tips:

  • Grade and sort your grain—remove foreign material, broken grain and immatures to get better prices.
  • Keep samples and moisture-tested certificates if buyers request them. Portable moisture meters and simple balances pay off at sale time.
  • Consider collective marketing through farmer groups to aggregate quantities and negotiate better prices or to access larger buyers.
  • Know local procurement seasons: demand often rises after monsoon when stocks are low; align harvest and sales accordingly or store if expecting higher prices later.

Sorghum is low-cost compared with many irrigated crops, but returns depend on yields, input costs and market access. Keep simple records of input costs, labour and yield per plot to judge profitability and adjust planting area next season.
