Why grow cassava (tapioca) in Haryana?

Cassava is a hardy root crop that can produce income on marginal soils, tolerate dry spells and serve both as a food and industrial crop (starch, chips). In Haryana it is best suited to farmers who can manage planting around the monsoon or who have access to irrigation to grow during a longer window.

Climate and soil

Cassava performs best where temperatures stay warm (daily mean above 20°C) and frost is absent. It tolerates a wide range of soils but gives the best results on well-drained, deep loams with good internal drainage. Avoid waterlogged, saline patches.

Practical checks before you plant

  • Do a simple soil test: focus on texture, pH and available P and K. Cassava tolerates pH 5.5–7.5 but extremes reduce yield.
  • Check your field for hardpans or poor drainage; if present, either avoid or incorporate deep ripping and raised beds.

Varieties and planting material

Tapioca (cassava) is usually grown from stem cuttings. Choose disease-free, healthy cuttings from reliable sources. In India, improved varieties released by national and state research centres are recommended—consult your local Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) or state agriculture university to learn which clones are best suited for Haryana conditions and markets (table, starch or chips).

Use the following practical guidelines for cuttings:

  • Take 20–25 cm long semi-woody stem cuttings with at least 5–7 nodes.
  • Use cuttings from healthy, mature plants not showing mosaic symptoms or dieback.
  • Store cuttings in shade and plant as soon as possible to reduce drying and sprout loss.

Land preparation and spacing

Prepare a fine tilth and remove large clods and stumps to make planting and weeding easier. For heavier soils consider ridges or raised beds to improve drainage.

  • Common spacings: 90 x 90 cm to 100 x 100 cm. Closer spacings (75–90 cm) can be used for higher density planting but require more careful nutrient and water management.
  • Plant cuttings at an angle or vertically with 2–3 nodes below the soil surface and 2 nodes above. Planting depth around 5–8 cm is adequate depending on soil.

Sowing time for Haryana

  • Rainfed: sow at the onset of the monsoon (June–July) so the crop establishes on natural rainfall.
  • Irrigated: two windows are practical—late winter/early spring planting (February–March) or monsoon planting to utilize residual soil moisture. Choose based on irrigation availability and market timing.

Nutrition and fertiliser management

Cassava responds strongly to potassium and phosphorus for root bulking. Always start with a soil test and adjust rates accordingly. Where a test is not available, use moderate, balanced fertiliser and split applications for best response.

  • Typical field guidance (adjust after soil test): nitrogen (N) roughly 60–100 kg/ha, phosphorus (P2O5) 30–60 kg/ha, potassium (K2O) 60–120 kg/ha. Use well-composted farmyard manure (5–10 t/ha) at planting to improve soil structure.
  • Apply a portion of nitrogen at planting and the remainder 2–3 months after sprouting. Apply phosphorus at planting and potassium in split doses if using higher rates.
  • Micronutrients: zinc or boron may be limiting on some soils — apply based on deficiency signs or soil test.

Irrigation and moisture management

Cassava is drought-tolerant but yields fall if moisture stress occurs during root bulking. Practical irrigation guidance:

  • Establishment needs consistent moisture for the first 6–8 weeks. Keep soil moist but not waterlogged.
  • During root bulking (4–8 months after planting) ensure regular moisture—supplemental irrigation during dry spells can substantially improve yields.
  • Avoid waterlogging; fields with poor drainage should be avoided or raised beds used.

Weed control, intercrops and mulching

  • Weeding: first 60–90 days are critical. Two weedings (or a combination of herbicide and hand weeding) are commonly required early on.
  • Intercropping: short-duration legumes (cowpea, green gram) with cassava during the first 2–3 months can provide additional income, improve soil cover and fix N. Remove or manage intercrops before they compete strongly for moisture.
  • Mulch with straw or green material to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, especially on lighter soils.

Pest and disease management

Prevention through clean planting material and crop hygiene is the most effective approach.

  • Use certified, virus-free cuttings. Mosaic virus and bacterial wilt can reduce yields; rogue out symptomatic plants early.
  • Common pests include mealybugs and nematodes. Monitor regularly. Use biological controls and neem-based products for sap-sucking pests; manage nematodes with crop rotation and organic amendments where possible.
  • Keep field borders clean and avoid planting near infected fields. Consult local extension for current recommendations and registered products.

Harvesting and storage

Harvest timing depends on purpose: early harvest (8–9 months) for fresh roots, or 10–12 months (or beyond) for higher starch accumulation. Roots become fibrous if left too long in some varieties.

  • Harvest carefully using forks or ploughing to avoid bruising. Damaged roots deteriorate quickly.
  • Market fresh roots soon after harvest — cassava roots are best processed or sold within a few days unless cooled or treated.
  • For starch or chip markets, clean, wash and process quickly. If storage is needed, short-term cool, shaded storage is preferable; long-term storage requires processing (drying, grinding, starch extraction).

Post-harvest handling and marketing

Know your market before you plant: table roots, animal feed, chips for starch plants or direct starch extraction all have different quality requirements. Arrange buyers or processing options in advance (local traders, starch units, feed mills) to avoid price slumps at harvest.

Crop rotation and soil health

Rotate cassava with legumes or cereals to break pest cycles and rebuild soil fertility. Avoid continuous cassava on the same plot to reduce nematode build-up and disease pressure.

  • Confirm market and intended use (fresh root, starch, feed).
  • Source healthy, certified planting material from KVKs, seed farms or reliable suppliers.
  • Get a basic soil test and plan fertiliser accordingly.
  • Plan irrigation schedule for critical growth stages or choose monsoon planting if rainfed.
  • Prepare a pest and disease surveillance plan: regular scouting, sanitation and access to treatment options.
