Why cassava (tapioca) for the Brahmaputra Valley?

Cassava is a hardy root crop well suited to the warm, humid conditions and alluvial soils of the Brahmaputra Valley. It tolerates marginal soils and seasonal moisture variability, provides flexible harvest timing and can be used for food, feed and industrial starch. For smallholders it can be a reliable mid- to long-term cash crop when grown with basic agronomy and timely management.

Choosing land and soil

  • Staggered harvest: One advantage of cassava is that roots can be harvested progressively from the same field as needed.

Post-harvest handling and storage

  • Temporary storage: If immediate processing is not possible, keep roots in shaded, cool, well-ventilated places and avoid piling that causes bruising.
  • Value-add: Consider small-scale processing to flour, chips or starch to extend shelf life and capture better prices rather than selling fresh roots alone.

Yield expectations and economics

Yields vary with variety, soil fertility, planting density and management. Under modest inputs and good management cassava can be a profitable option because of low input needs, flexible harvest times and diverse markets (food, feed, starch). Prepare a simple enterprise budget for your farm using local input and output prices before scaling up.

Crop rotation and sustainability

  • Rotate cassava with legumes, cereals or oilseeds to break pest cycles and rebuild soil nitrogen and organic matter.
  • Maintain cover crops in fallows and return residues or compost to the land for long-term fertility.
